William D. Bellamy entered the College of Engineering at UW in 1965. He left to serve as an infantry officer in the United States Army, and then returned to earn a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1972, followed by an M.S. in Civil Engineering in 1974. His education continued with a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University in 1984. His career in environmental engineering includes employment with Texaco and CH2M HILL where he is currently a senior vice president and fellow, responsible for directing global water technologies.
He has served as a member of the National Drinking Water Advisory Council, Science Advisory Board Committee on Homeland Security, the UW College of Engineering National Advisory Board, and the College of Environmental Management and Policy, Denver University. His most notable work has resulted in enhancements to public health protection through the development and application of improved drinking water technologies such as ozone and UV disinfection, arsenic removal, pathogen removal, and sustainable systems. He has delivered over 100 presentations and papers and received best paper awards twice from the American Water Works Association. He is a third generation UW engineering graduate following his grandfather Ben, and father John (who was also a UW engineering professor). His sons, Michael and John are UW engineers and make up the fourth generation of Bellamy graduates from the UW College of Engineering.
