Women in Engineering

The College of Engineering and Physical Sciences is committed to increasing the recruitment and retention of women because we know that diversity adds value to our learning community, culture, teaching, research productivity, and innovation. We offer several programs, including staff-led and student-led, that aim to create an encouraging environment for young women to thrive in their academic and professional careers. Additionally, we partner with departments and groups on campus to develop programming that celebrates women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Female Mentor Program

The College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Female Mentor Program invites undergraduate and graduate level students to be mentored by female alumni working as engineers in industry. This program aims to build a strong sense of community among students and alumni, as well as a support network for navigating challenges and opportunities in the academic and industry workforce. This year’s cohort of engineering mentees represent several engineering disciplines including petroleum, chemical, mechanical, civil, computer and electrical engineering. They also represent a diverse population of young women from across the U.S., as well as from Canada, Nigeria, India, and China. The mentor professionals represent industry expertise in civil, environmental, computer and structural engineering, and computer science. The program was first initiated in 2016 and has proven to be an inspiring program.

Society of Women Engineers (SWE)

The purpose of SWE is to stimulate women to achieve full potential as engineers and leaders, expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and demonstrate the value of diversity. Partnership Programs and Initiatives:

Own it! Awards

For the past three years, the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences has partnered with Wyoming EPSCoR and other STEM entities on campus to honor the outstanding scientific and scholarly achievements made by female students, faculty and staff on campus. This is a great annual event that celebrates the value of diversity in academia. Check out the Own it! webpage for more information.

Wyoming Latina Youth Conference (WLYC)

The WLYC aims to empower young Latinas through mentorship, awareness, education and leadership. For the past three years, the UW, College of Engineering and Physical Sciences has partnered with Dr. Cecilia Aragon, the WLYC Director and Department Head of the UW, Latino/a Studies Department, to provide participants with the opportunity to explore engineering through hands-on learning. For more information about the conference, please visit the WLYC webpage.

Women in STEM Conference

The Women in STEM Conference, which is sponsored and organized by the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium, is designed to encourage young women in grades 7-12 to learn first-hand about careers in STEM from accomplished professional women. By presenting role models, the organizers hope to encourage young women and minority groups to pursue higher education and careers that will help build a talent pool for the growing technical workforce. For the past several years, the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences has provided workshops for participants to explore the diverse fields of engineering through hands-on learning. For more information about the Conference, please visit the WY NASA Space Grant Consortium webpage.
