Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is commonly employed to analyze paramagnetic species. Inorganic complexes that contain paramagnetic metal ions, paramagnetic metal ion-containing proteins and organic radicals are amenable to EPR spectroscopy. The Chemistry Department owns a Bruker EMX Spectrometer. The spectrometer is located in Room 12 in the basement of the Physical Sciences Building.
EPR measurements can be performed in the X-band (9.5 GHz) at room temperature and
at low temperatures with the availability of an Oxford liquid nitrogen/helium cryostat.
The instrument incorporates a Bruker ER 041 XG microwave bridge. A high sensitivity
resonator ER4119HS and a dual mode cavity ER4116DM are available for use. ER4119HS
is suitable for experiments with single unpaired electron-containing compounds, and
the dual mode resonator is suitable for anisotropic studies of triplets, biradicals,
and of transition metal and rare earth ions containing 'forbidden' fine structures
or hyperfine structure transitions.
EPR spectra are usually measured for both solid and solution samples. Quartz sample
tubes are used to maximize sensitivity. A new AquaX sample cell specifically designed
for aqueous and other lossy solutions is also available. New users will need to be
trained on the instrument. Please contact Dr. Navamoney Arulsamy if you would like
to schedule a session for your experiment.
