The purpose of the College of Education’s Advisory Council on diversity is to heighten the diversity awareness level of students, staff, faculty, alumni, and others by collecting and sharing resources to assist us in engaging in deeper conversations related to the many aspects and forms of diversity. View our strategic plan.
The council meets once a month and welcomes anyone who is interested in attending. If you would like further information about the meeting times, please contact Lay-nah Blue Morris-Howe or Amy Roberts.
The UW College of Education diversity council offers a book club that is open to all college faculty, staff and students with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Participants read a selected book and join in group discussions with options to engage virtually, in person, or via online discussion threads.

Diversity is the adherence to the democratic value of mutual respect for, celebration of, and protection of the differences that make up the peoples of the world. It requires the development of a critical consciousness individually, institutionally, and societally about differences in all existing forms and levels of human experiences. These differences are protected in the Constitution and Bill of Rights and figure prominently in the founding document of the United States of America:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all People are created equal, that they are endowed with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."
Examination of historical events, cultural practices, and socially constructed notions of human differences, however, reveals denial of these rights, resulting in continuing negative impacts on lived experiences. Systemic patterns of dominance and suppression have conferred power and privilege to certain dominant groups and have created social injustice to individuals and marginalized groups. Only with respect for diversity and equity can political and social democracy be realized.
