The College of Education recommends that all in-state students obtain their Wyoming Substitute Teaching Permit through the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board (PTSB). The permit will allow students to gain experience in a classroom and get paid! Additionally, school districts may require a substitute teaching permit in order to complete residency within their district. Students are eligible to apply for the substitute teaching permit when they have completed 60 or more college credit hours. The PTSB requires that applicants complete a fingerprinted background check to apply. The PTSB also requires that applicants complete the United States and Wyoming Constitution requirement. The College of Education will not pay for the PTSB application fees. Students are encouraged to contact their advisor in the College of Education Student Success Center for more information on instructions, forms, fingerprint cards, etc. required for the application.
Additional information for the Wyoming Substitute Teaching Permit can be found on the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board website.
Students must email a pdf copy of the permit to the College of Education Student Success Center at edquest@uwyo.edu when received from the PTSB. Pictures taken with phones will not be accepted.
If students are unable to obtain their substitute teaching permit or if they are completing an online program through the College of Education in another state, they will be required to complete an approved background check in order to enroll in practicum courses and residency in teaching. Students are encouraged to contact the College of Education Student Success Center at eqdquest@uwyo.edu or (307) 766-2230 if there are any questions on background check requirements.
