The Department offers support packages for most of our graduate student population. These compensation levels are all greater than the base rates dictated by the University of Wyoming. The support packages are assigned on a yearly basis contingent upon fulfilling department and your primary advisor's requirements. Typically students are guaranteed at least two years of support in their acceptance letters. Additional support may be available through your major advisor. Support packages are a mixture of research assistantships (RA) funded by external funding, merit-based department and university scholarships and teaching assistantships (TA) funded via the department. All applicants are automatically considered for these support packages by applying to our department.
Department Merit Scholarships: Named merit-based scholarships are provided to a few outstanding graduate student applicants every year from our endowment funds given to us by generous donors. These scholarships may require some TA duties. Faculty members nominate students for these scholarships. More information on WyoScholarships.
University-based Graduate Assistantships: A variety of sources on campus from time to time provide funding for graduate students on a competitive basis. Faculty members nominate students for these assistantships.
Research assistantships (RA): Research assistantships are available from funds provided by research grants to individual professors. We recommend that you view our professors’ web pages for the latest research opportunities, although this list may not be up to date. If you find projects of interest to you, feel free to contact the professor(s) via email to discuss projects and if RA funding is available. Department Academic year (9-month) support.
The Department offers several academic year teaching assistantships which covers stipend, tuition, fees, and health care. Students are expected to work an average of 18–20 hours per week as a teaching assistant in addition to their research work with their thesis advisor(s).
