Mechanical EngineeringME Student Team First From Wyoming to Participate in NASA Design Challenge

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is the broadest of all engineering disciplines. It deals with diverse engineering problems in solid mechanics, fluid dynamics and aerodynamics, heat transfer, energy conversion, vibration, design, manufacturing, controls, materials science, and electromechanical systems, among others. Mechanical engineers are employed in almost every industry. If there are moving parts or if energy is converted from one form to another, a mechanical engineer was responsible for the design. Students receive a hands-on education with small ME class sizes averaging 28 students per lecture class and 10 students per laboratory section.

Mission Statement

The Mechanical Engineering department seeks to be a nationally recognized top-tier mechanical engineering department that provides excellent opportunities for students to learn from exceptional educators and researchers, significant world-class research, services to our community and state, and an environment of engagement, diligence, creativity, and excellence.

A team of University of Wyoming students was the first from Wyoming to be selected and participate in NASA’s 2022 Micro-g Neutral Buoyancy Experiment Design Teams (NExT) engineering design challenge.

Five undergraduate students in the UW College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, dubbed the Wyoming Space Wranglers, designed and built the Cowboy Claw, a lunar reusable surface anchoring device. Team members were Cameron Ball, from Colorado Springs, Colo.; Forrest Bucholz, of Alpine; Reese Romero, from Cody; James Sheets, of Powell; and Daniel Wenger, from Vale, Ore.  READ MORE

University of Wyoming alumnus, Eli Ellis, has his Bachelor of Science degree in chemical and energy systems engineering and a graduate degree in mechanical engineering. Eli is working hard to make Wyoming's most beloved resource a sustaining part of its future. Eli, who is from Cheyenne, Wyoming, uses his research to develop new ways for the coal industry to use coal other than as a combustible fuel.
