Classical Greek & Roman Civilizations

Welcome to the Classics Section of UW's Department of Modern & Classical Languages.  As a department of foreign languages, literatures, and cultural studies, we prepare our students for life and careers in an increasingly global world. Our program in Classics provides students an understanding of classical Greek and Roman civilization, literature, and political thought, which form the basis of Western belief systems, social norms, and ethical values.

Minor requirements:

  • CLAS 2020 Classical Greek Civilization (3) or HIST 2120 Greece & Ancient Near East (3)

  • CLAS 2040 Classical Roman Civilization (3) or HIST 2130 Ancient Rome (3)

  • Electives – 12 hours chosen from Classics 3000-level or above.  Up to 6 hours of Latin at the 3000-level or above may be counted as electives.  Other courses about Ancient Mediterranean cultures that are not taught under Classics may be submitted for approval as electives to the advisor for the minor.
