Two teams from the University of Wyoming’s College of Business both placed third in the 2019 Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative’s Consortium Case Competition.
The competition, held last week in Denver, exposes college students to a thought-provoking business ethics case, similar to situations they might face in their professional careers. It is designed to challenge students’ ethical reasoning; give students tools for ethical decision making; and raise awareness of the importance of principle-based ethics.
The Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative Collegiate Program was established in 2010 to foster a high standard of ethics in students and to strengthen the teaching of principle-based ethics in young people.
The five-year pilot was launched with eight business schools at universities in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. With its success, the initiative was renewed for another five years (2015-19) and expanded to include two more business schools and one law school. More than 400,000 students, faculty and business people have been impacted by the program, according to the competition’s organizers.
The UW undergraduate team was mentored by Kent Noble, UW College of Business Bill Daniels Chair of Business Ethics. Undergraduate team members, listed by hometowns and majors, are:
Centennial, Colo. -- Melissa Riley, management.
Cheyenne -- Shelby Bell, management.
Laramie -- Grant Asay and Michael Blaney, both management; and Fritz Ogden, chemical engineering.
Thornton, Colo. -- Amanda Smith, management.
The UW graduate team was mentored by Dick McGinity, UW president emeritus and College of Business professor of management. Graduate team members, listed by hometowns and majors, are:
Cheyenne -- Jennica Fournier, PharmD and Master of Business Administration (MBA).
Gillette -- Heather Allen, finance track MBA; and James Francis, master’s student in engineering/MBA.

The Daniels Fund, established by cable television pioneer Bill Daniels, is a private charitable foundation dedicated to making life better for the people of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming through its grants program, scholarship program and ethics initiative.
