“Jazz in the Plaza” is the theme of the University of Wyoming’s Summer Concert Series’ latest offering Wednesday, July 17. The event is free and open to the public.
The Dougan Smith Trio will perform from 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. on Simpson Plaza. UW Residence Life and Dining Services will provide burgers -- including a veggie option -- pulled pork, hot dogs, sides and drinks for purchase from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Dougan Smith, a jazz saxophonist, is a master’s degree student and graduate assistant in the UW Department of Music. He earned his undergraduate degree in saxophone performance from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC) in 2018.
Smith has played in various bands and ensembles, including in an orchestra on a cruise ship. In addition to performing, he arranges music for various projects. He recently arranged a show for American Idol contestant Ta-Tynisa Wilson.
He was a semifinalist in the North American Saxophone Alliance jazz competition and won two DownBeat awards for best undergraduate big band as a member of UWEC Jazz Ensemble 1. His debut album, “Introducing Dougan Smith Quartet,” is available at www.cdbaby.com.
