The University of Wyoming men’s rodeo club closed out the fall season with the second-best point production in school history to take the regional team lead, while the Cowgirls are running away with the women’s division.
The Cowboys finished the five-rodeo fall schedule in a flurry, piling up a season-best 850 points at Laramie County Community College’s (LCCC) Shane Dubie Memorial Rodeo in Cheyenne last weekend. The production was just five points off the school record set a year ago at Central Wyoming College.
The late-season surge, which saw the Cowboys score a whopping 1,580 points in the final two rodeo victories, boosted the UW men to the overall Central Rocky Mountain Region (CRMR) lead with 3,000 points. The Pokes overtook season-long leader Casper College by 185 points going into the spring season next March.
The Cowboys made up a 305-point deficit over the T-Birds in the final competition of the year.
There is no close team race on the women’s side. From the get-go, the UW Cowgirls have dominated the CRMR, winning three times, including the LCCC rodeo, while finishing second twice. The UW women have compiled 1,866.66 points through five rodeos to open up an 850-point lead over second-place Casper College.
Both UW teams are the defending CRMR champions -- something the Cowboys and Cowgirls had not accomplished in the same season in 13 years. Now, the Cowboys and Cowgirls are on pace to repeat the feat for the second consecutive season.
“This entire team has been challenged for excellence in everything they do, from 5:30 a.m. workouts to an intense practice regimen. They battle day in and day out, and it shows up at the rodeos,” second-year Coach Beau Clark says. “I could not be more proud of them -- men, women, freshmen to seniors. The UW rodeo athletes continue to amaze me each week.”
The Cowboys enjoyed a nearly 400-point margin of victory over second-place Chadron State College at the LCCC rodeo. The Pokes scored in all six men’s events; the points team did not win any individual titles, but the overall depth carried the club to the team title.
Two individuals scored 200 or more points, including 235 by Donny Proffit, from Kemmerer, in two separate events. The freshman roughstock competitor, who also will wrestle for the UW men’s team later this year, won the opening round of bull riding and finished second in the average. He added to his point production, placing third in the bareback riding competition.
Transfer Austin Hurlburt, from Norfolk, Neb., also placed in the average of two events. The junior placed third in both the tie down and team roping competitions. His roping partner, Houston Brown, of Miles City, Mont., also added points in calf roping. He then added saddle bronc riding points.
Junior Jase Staudt, from Nathrop, Colo., made it three Cowboys points team members placing in the tie down competition, finishing as the runner-up for an additional 150 points.
All-around regional leader Seth Peterson, from Minot, N.D., placed fourth in the steer wrestling average, and teammate Caden Camp, from Belgrade, Mont., added points in the same event.
The Cowgirls put together their best effort of the season, scoring 408.33 points to easily outpace runner-up Eastern Wyoming College, which totaled 270 points.
Regional all-around women’s leader Taylour Latham continued her torrid fall season in her first year as a Cowgirl. The junior transfer from Roosevelt, Utah, scored more than half of the women’s team points, placing second in the barrel racing average and third in goat tying.
Two of her teammates on the four-member points team added to the output. Rozet’s Casey Reimler continued her late surge, finishing among the top six in the average in two separate events. The senior was fifth in goat tying and sixth in barrel racing.
Final team points came from junior Jacey Thompson, from Yoder, who was sixth in the barrel racing average.
Several non-points team members for both the Cowboys and Cowgirls had good weekends as well.
Chadron Coffield, of Yuma, Colo., split first place in steer wrestling and was fifth in tie down roping; Chase Rose, from Lincoln, Calif., was fifth in the bareback riding average; and Cash Wilson, of Wall, S.D., placed third in saddle bronc riding.
For the Cowgirls, Karson Bradley, of Big Piney, placed sixth in the barrel racing average; Teisha Coffield, from Yuma, Colo., split sixth place in goat tying; and Justene Hirsig, of Cheyenne, was the breakaway roping runner-up.
