For the first time, both University of Wyoming men’s singing groups -- the Singing Statesmen and the Happy Jacks -- will perform at the same concert.
“I Have Wings,” conducted by UW Department of Music Professor Nicole Lamartine, will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.
Tickets cost $10 for the public, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for students. Tickets are available at the Performing Arts box office and the Wyoming Union information desk, by calling (307) 766-6666 or by going online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts.
The UW Singing Statesmen will present traditional songs, including a setting of Mary Coleridge’s poem “When I Hear Her, I Have Wings”; a new arrangement of “Shenandoah”; and “Mattinata,” an old Italian song made famous by tenor Luciano Pavarotti.
The UW Singing Statesmen is a non-auditioned male choir representing a wide variety of backgrounds and academic disciplines. The men are brought together by the distinct brotherhood and camaraderie of male ensemble singing, Lamartine says. The ensemble promotes the rich tradition of male singing through school clinics and collaborations.
The UW Singing Statesmen have received prestigious invitations to the 2012 Northwest American Choral Directors Association conference, the Wyoming Music Educators conference, and have had four collaborations with the Jackson-based Bar J Wranglers and the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra.
The Happy Jacks will entertain the audience with pop and contemporary tunes. The student-led male a cappella group is composed of select members of the Statesmen and is well known for its performances of contemporary music.
Lamartine is director of choral activities at UW, leading the Collegiate Chorale, the Singing Statesmen and the Happy Jacks. She also teaches conducting and studio voice.
Her choirs have performed at several national and regional conferences, and she is a recognized expert in females conducting male choirs. An active performer, she has sung with Conspirare, the Santa Fe Desert Chorale and Colorado Bach Ensemble.
