Current Research Projects
The research team focuses on improving health outcomes through projects related to disease prevention, health behaviors and culturally responsive healthcare. Current research explores diabetes prevention, lifestyle change, perceptions of health risks, healthcare provider experiences and the nurse-client relationship. These projects contribute to evidence-based practices that support healthier communities.
Student Researchers
Elise Gerdes
I joined the research team because of my background working in the healthcare field and my experience observing how type II diabetes is managed by both patients and providers. I wanted to deepen my understanding of the factors that influence diabetes management, particularly how patient and provider attitudes and perceptions impact treatment decisions and outcomes.
Julie Sharpes
I joined the research team to gain valuable experience in the world of healthcare research and outreach. I was drawn to the area of type II diabetes research due to a wish to learn more about it and unlearn many of the common misconceptions after my dad was determined "pre-diabetic" by our general practitioner.
Colter Linford
I joined this group because I thought it looked like a great opportunity for me to learn more about diabetes and how the research process works. One of my first thoughts in potentially joining the group was how good it would look on resumes. I thoroughly enjoy working with this group and learning and researching together.
what its like to be on the research team
Led by Dr. Jenifer Thomas, the research team provides students with mentorship throughout every stage of the research process. Team members contribute to manuscript writing, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, abstract submissions and grant writing while collaborating on active research projects. Dr. Thomas encourages students to share ideas, develop new skills and grow as confident researchers in a supportive, team-based environment.

Students interested in joining the research team should be reliable, self-motivated and able to work independently while collaborating with others. Team members attend weekly research meetings, provide a flexible schedule of availability and communicate consistently about assigned responsibilities.
