Experiential Education

Office of Experiential Education

The experiential education program at the University of Wyoming School of Pharmacy consists of a series of directed pharmacy practice experiences or rotations that occur outside of the traditional classroom setting. These important experiences provide students with an opportunity to apply and practice the knowledge, skills, attitudes behaviors developed from previous and concurrent coursework in a variety of pharmacy practice environments. The experiential education program consists of two components: 1) Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) and 2) Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs).

APPE International Rotation Opportunity

Students in the class of 2026 were the first to participate in a novel Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) activity between pharmacy students in Wyoming and Cardiff University in Cardiff, Wales, UK.

COIL is an inclusive way of allowing all students in a class to have an intercultural experience without having to travel. Over two months, students engaged with one another via online discussions to learn about and compare healthcare, pharmacy education and pharmacy practice in each country. A culminating activity was having small groups of students from each country working together to solve a patient case in the online Wales Virtual Hospital platform. Students were able to learn about another culture, how pharmacy and medical terminology may differ in the UK, and practice teamwork and clinical decision-making through a digital case.

Future plans include continuing the COIL activity and developing student exchanges between our two locations. These international collaborations can enhance students’ educational experiences and prepare them for a globalized healthcare environment.
