Center for Carbon Capture and Conversion
Program Manager, Technology Scale-Up

Mark Behrens is the Program Manager for Technology Scale-Up in the Center for Carbon Capture and Conversion (CCCC) at the School of Energy Resources (SER).
Behrens holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota (1982) and a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware (1984). He began his career with 3M, where he spent several decades leading international efforts to scale laboratory innovations into full-scale manufacturing. He worked for extended periods as an expat in, and supported production at, more than a dozen 3M facilities across South America, Asia, and Europe, including in countries such as Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Japan, China, South Korea, France, Wales, England, and Germany.
Throughout his career, Behrens played a key role in the development and commercialization of a range of consumer and industrial products—including carbon black window tint film, retroreflective sheeting used in transportation sectors, porous film membranes for gas/liquid/solid separations and medical drug delivery, as well as hook-and-loop fasteners and adhesives for soft goods and medical devices.
Prior to joining SER in a full-time capacity in 2024, Behrens served as a contractor with the CCCC, where he demonstrated a deep commitment to advancing coal processing technologies. He continues to play a vital role in moving these innovations toward commercial deployment.
