Center for Carbon Capture and Conversion
Assistant Research Professional, Mechanical Engineering

Elijah (Eli) Ellis is an Assistant Research Professional in the Center for Carbon Capture and Conversion at the School of Energy Resources where he focuses on the flash pyrolysis coal processing technology project.
Earning both his undergraduate and Master’s degrees from UW, Ellis graduated in Mechanical Engineering after having defended his Master’s thesis on the processing technology.
Ellis is one of many researchers that has worked on the project over the years as it has advanced. He has been responsible for optimizing the processing technology to produce consistent products and evaluating various processing conditions with the ultimate goal of scaling up the technology. He also provides critical input to support the CCCC and the Principal Investigators who research the uses for the downstream flash pyrolysis products. In addition to the applied research work on campus with the technology, he is involved in supporting the design and operation of the coal refinery demonstration unit at the Wyoming Innovation Center in Gillette, WY.
In addition to the applied research of turning raw coal into various gases, liquids and char materials to supply other research groups on campus, he is involved in multiple ongoing publication opportunities to document the research.
