Zunsheng 'John' Jiao
Center for Economic Geology Research
Project Manager and Senior Geologist, Carbon Storage

John Jiao is the Program Manager for Carbon Storage and Chief Geologist in the Center for Economic Geology Research in the School of Energy Resources.
Earning his Ph.D. from the University of Wyoming in Geology, Jiao is a widely respected scholar in his field. His research focuses on carbon capture and storage characterization, including detailed reservoir modeling and geomechanical analysis for CO2 storage.
He has been involved in significant projects, such as the Wyoming CarbonSAFE initiative, which aims to sequester large amounts of CO2 from industrial sources in underground geological formations. His expertise also extends to seismic reflections of rock properties and seismic reservoir modeling, and he has authored more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He has also served as a co-principal investigator on various projects.
He also served as the lead under the DOE-funded Joint U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center (CERC). Under the CERC initiative, CEGR researchers worked on a CO2-enhanced oil recovery (EOR) storage project in the Ordos Basin, China.
He was also recognized with a UW Distinguished Research Service Award in the 2022-23 fiscal year.
