Zunsheng 'John' Jiao
Center for Economic Geology Research
Principal Scientist

John Jiao is a Principal Scientist in the Center for Economic Geology Research in the School of Energy Resources.
Earning his Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Wyoming, Jiao is a widely respected scholar in his field, having led the CEGR subsurface research team for over a decade. His research focuses on carbon capture and storage characterization, including detailed reservoir modeling and geomechanical analysis for CO2 storage.
He has been involved in significant projects, such as the Wyoming CarbonSAFE initiative, which aims to sequester large amounts of CO2 from industrial sources in underground geological formations. His expertise also extends to seismic reflections of rock properties and seismic reservoir modeling, and he has authored more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He has also served as a co-principal investigator on various projects.
He also served as the lead under the DOE-funded Joint U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center (CERC). Under the CERC initiative, CEGR researchers worked on a CO2-enhanced oil recovery (EOR) storage project in the Ordos Basin, China.
He was also recognized with a UW Distinguished Research Service Award in the 2022-23 fiscal year.
