Matthew Johnson
Center for Economic Geology Research
Associate Research Professional, Subsurface Modeling/Remote Sensing

Matthew Johnson, a Texas native, is a seasoned geoscientist specializing in subsurface
characterization and remote sensing at the University of Wyoming’s Center for Economic
Geology Research. With two decades of experience, he leads the development of detailed,
geologically rigorous models by integrating geological, geophysical, petrophysical,
and geospatial datasets to support CO₂ storage and hydrocarbon reservoir characterization.
Prior to joining the School of Energy Resources in 2018, Matthew spent over 12 years
at the Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute, working closely with Wyoming operators to
increase production in their oil fields. He collaborates across disciplines to provide
technical expertise to carbon capture projects and petroleum exploration and development.
He is currently completing his Master of Science in Geospatial Information Science
and Technology, bringing cutting-edge expertise in remote sensing and UAV operations
to his work. His extensive background in reservoir modeling, field geology, and project
leadership has made him a trusted contributor to both academic research and industry
partnerships. At the request of the Petroleum Engineering Department, Matthew actively
guest lectures, mentors, and provides guidance to future petroleum engineers.
