School of Computing

Spring/Summer 2023 Faculty Grants Program

The School of Computing is soliciting proposals from all UW faculty members to support Spring (and Summer) 2023 projects that will advance computing research, learning, and engagement across the university.

Priority will be given to proposals that fulfill one or more of the following criteria
  1. Align with university initiatives and/or state priorities
  2. Contribute to building new opportunities or capacity in applied computing, the application of computing, or critical issues related to computing; or extend the reach of existing computing initiatives
  3. Impact student experiences and student learning in computing
  4. Involve, engage or advance the School of Computing in its initial phase (e.g., through its new research scientists, founding adjunct faculty, centers, staff, goals, etc.)
  5. Contribute to the School of Computing values of diversity, equity and inclusion

Examples of potential proposal elements include, but are not in any way limited to
  • Course development that increases student learning options in any area of computing
  • Seed funding for new research or engagement projects involving computing
  • Development or provision of training in computing
  • New collaboration with the Advanced Research Computing Center, Wyoming Innovation Partnership DataHub or other UW computing support unit
  • Preparation of computing applications for deployment at the NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center
  • Support for proposal development for external funding for computing projects
  • Development and support of partnerships in computing with K-12, community colleges or community partners
  • Faculty development in computing

We are particularly interested in supporting graduate students in incorporating and advancing computing in their research.

Please direct questions about the Faculty Awards to Gabrielle Allen, Director of School of Computing, preferably via Microsoft Teams chat.

Proposals

Concise proposals (e.g., no more than two pages) in PDF format should address the following elements:

  • Project Title
  • Faculty name and academic unit
  • Names of any collaborators
  • Project Description
  • Summarize the planned project to advance computing research, learning and/or engagement at the University of Wyoming
  • Describe the plan of work and the project team
  • What are the envisioned deliverables/outcomes?
  • Project Motivation
  • As relevant, describe how the project addresses the Priority Criteria 1-5 above

Proposals should be submitted to uwyo-soc@uwyo.edu before 5pm on Monday, January 30th, 2023.

Budget

In addition to the two-page proposal, proposers should attach a budget and budget justification for up to $15,000 (before fringe benefits) that must be expended before June 30th, 2023 (note that although we require funds to be spent this fiscal year, there will be an opportunity for additional support to continue students over the summer). Budget should include as much detail as possible, i.e., type of student support, salary/stipend amount, equipment needed, etc.

Funds can be used for:

  • Research assistant support (undergraduate/graduate student, postdoc, etc.). Because of the timing of the award, we will work with departmental staff to change GA funding and we will allow for corrections for funding to begin in January
  • Workshop expenses and participant support
  • Costs for hosting and travel for visiting scholars
  • Essential travel or equipment in direct support of project goals
  • Faculty summer salary

Review

Proposals will be panel reviewed on the following criteria:

  • Quality of the project idea
  • Quality of the work plan
  • Alignment with Priority Criteria 1-5 above

Funding decisions will also consider available funding and disciplinary diversity.
