Wyoming Coaching Laboratory Pilot

WYCOLA to Take a New Direction

In Wyoming school districts, instructional facilitators or coaches work with teachers to help them develop their professional practice. More than 50 teachers and administrators from Wyoming school districts honed their skills in as participants in the Wyoming Coaching Laboratory (WYCOLA) in 2018 and 2019.

The WYCOLA pilot program was established as an innovation under the University of Wyoming Trustees Education Initiative with a three-year pilot grant that ended in 2020. WYCOLA co-directors UW Associate Professor Kate Muir-Welsh and Albany County School District #1 Professional Development Specialist Kate Kniss, will seek to continue the Wyoming Coaching Laboratory as an independent initiative.

The WYCOLA format begins with a two-week summer institute in Laramie, where educational professionals explore and unpack the complex work of teaching. A key feature is a "laboratory" classroom in which a master teacher teaches fifth- and sixth-grade learners while other WYCOLA participants observe remotely. This allows participants to define and explore core aspects of instructional practice, instructional coaching, and mentoring through activities grounded directly in the classroom experience.
