About UW's Doctor of Education Degree
Offered entirely online, the Ed.D. will expose you to faculty who are doing cutting-edge
work in areas such as literacy, special education, science and math education, while
also giving you the chance to explore the questions you have about contemporary education
in a research context.
Unlike the Ph.D. in Education, which culminates in an independent research project,
the Ed.D. focuses on the development of an applied research dissertation that works
toward solving a real-world problem in an educational setting.
Not only will the UW Ed.D. in Education equip you with quantitative and qualitative
research skills, it will also prepare you to help shape the future of classroom instruction
as an educational leader committed to pushing the bounds of what students learn and
how they learn it.

With an Ed.D. in education, you can customize your degree to align with your unique
interests. Our program provides a choice of 2 concentrations for you to select from,
allowing you to focus on the area of study that best suits your career goals.

Absolutely! Our Ed.D. programs are designed with working professionals in mind. With our online courses, it’s possible to earn your Ed.D. while continuing to work full-time. This is a great route to advance your career without putting it on hold.
An Ed.D. isn’t always required for school leadership roles, but it can be a big advantage. Many positions—like building principal or district administrator—may only require a master’s and certification, but an Ed.D. can set you apart, deepen your leadership skills and open doors to higher-level or specialized roles in education.
In general, an Ed.D. is designed for professionals who want to lead and solve real-world problems in education settings, like schools, districts or nonprofits. The Ph.D. in Education is more research-focused, preparing graduates for careers in academia and scholarly research. Both are doctoral degrees but serve different career goals.
“UW's Ed.D. program was perfect for me as a working educator teaching part-time at multiple institutions. The faculty support, especially from my advisor, was exemplary. Through class sessions offered via synchronous video as well as regular online gatherings of advisees, I was able to get to know my classmates. Those connections have been valuable as we provide support to each other on projects outside of class and meet up at conferences. I'm very grateful for this program that has allowed me to advance my education with minimal disruption to my work and family."
