About the Master’s in Petroleum and Energy Engineering
This program gives students a deep understanding of a range of topics within energy and petroleum engineering. All students choose a concentration in one of the following:
- Advanced drilling engineering
- Energy engineering
- Data analytics
- Blockchain technology
In addition to these specialized concentration courses, students take a variety of advanced electives. All students must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours, typically 10 courses, to graduate. If you received an undergraduate degree in petroleum engineering, you will take 5 concentration courses and 5 electives. If you did not receive an undergraduate degree in petroleum engineering, you will take 5 graduate-level petroleum engineering courses and 5 concentration courses.

All prospective students are invited to apply for this degree, regardless of the topic of their undergraduate degree. However, students who did not receive a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering must complete 5 foundational petroleum engineering courses as part of the master’s program.
Master’s students are encouraged to get involved in at least one of UW’s many thriving student organizations. These organizations provide opportunities to network with professionals and other students in the industry. They also serve as a way to further your education outside the classroom by hosting workshops, events and guest speakers.
