About the Professional Writing Minor

The professional writing minor teaches students about writing and editing for publications, the web, nonprofits and more. Students are introduced to the skills and literacies they need to excel in a writing and communications-based career or to meet the communication challenges they will encounter in other career paths of all kinds.

Professional Writing Degree Highlights

Communication skills benefit everyone. That’s why the professional writing minor is an excellent addition to any degree — whether you plan to pursue a career in writing or not. The minor program gives students an opportunity to hone their communication skills, work with local businesses, and learn about different types of writing.  

Experiential Learning

Professional writing minor students frequently engage in client-based projects as part of their coursework — often working with local nonprofits. Outside of their coursework, students have the opportunity to complete a writing or communication-focused internship for program credit.

Workplace & Technical Writing Experience

Students are exposed to different types of workplace and technical writing and editing styles, giving them expertise they can apply to several career fields.

UW’s Professional Writing minor has challenged me to incorporate English into very real aspects of life. This minor helped me make sense of the legal, medical and policing worlds that I have been a part of. Through this minor, I have been inspired to be the change I want to see in the world!
