Wyoming’s Medical School Since 1997

WWAMI is an innovative medical school program supported by the Wyoming Legislature in partnership with the University of Washington. WWAMI (pronounced WHAM-ee) is an acronym for the five states served by the University of Washington School of Medicine: Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.

The Wyoming WWAMI program offers affordable, high-quality medical education for Wyoming residents. Students begin their foundational science education in a small cohort of 20 students at the University of Wyoming. This provides an excellent student-to-faculty ratio while maintaining the support, expertise, and infrastructure of the top-rated University of Washington School of Medicine. Our medical students then complete clinical clerkships across the 5-state WWAMI region.

Upon graduation, students receive a Doctor of Medicine degree (M.D.) from the University of Washington School of Medicine, a highly regarded medical school, and can enter any accredited medical residency program in the US to which they match.

About WWAMI

Over the course of your medical education, you’ll complete courses in Laramie and clinical rotations across the 5-state WWAMI region. Wyoming residents complete 18 months of foundational coursework at the University of Wyoming. The final two and a half years of the program are spent in clinical rotations across the WWAMI region of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.

The WWAMI partnership includes numerous universities, hospitals, patient care centers and faculty members, all of whom participate in the program to provide future physicians with the best possible medical education so they can return to practice in Wyoming.

Program Goals

  1. Provide publicly supported medical education.
  2. Increase the number of primary care physicians, especially in under-resourced areas.
  3. Provide community-based medical education.
  4. Achieve these goals in a cost-effective way.

WWAMI Medical Education Program Highlights

WWAMI is an innovative program that exposes future physicians to unique and diverse communities across the western United States. Our students experience small, tight-knit cohorts and begin providing patient care in the first few months of medical school. Learn more about the highlights of our program below.

Small Cohorts

Small cohorts allow our medical students to build true community, collaborate with peers and gain individual mentorship from faculty. That’s why WWAMI only accepts 20 students from Wyoming each year.

Excellent Faculty

The Wyoming WWAMI program is led by a group of talented physicians and Ph.D. scholars who are dedicated to training Wyoming’s future physicians. They are highly trained, award-winning faculty who are skilled in teaching the nationally ranked University of Washington School of Medicine curriculum.

Patient Care Experience

Patient care is a core element of every physician’s role. Our students begin learning clinical skills and seeing patients within the first few months of studying medicine at the University of Wyoming. Students continue to build this fundamental skill throughout their medical education, through clinical placements in Wyoming and in other locations across the WWAMI region.

LCME Accredited

Wyoming WWAMI is known for producing excellent physicians. The program with the University of Washington’s School of Medicine is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

Research & Service Learning Opportunities

All Wyoming medical students have opportunities to pursue impactful research and service learning projects. In the summer between their first and second years of medical school, many students complete community-based research while serving patients in small towns across Wyoming as part of the Rural/Underserved Opportunities Program (RUOP). Some students choose to pursue clinical research via the Scholarship of Discovery (SOD) program, and others are selected to complete the Global Health Immersion Program (GHIP) through the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Professional Development

Networking and professional development are key elements of the WWAMI medical education experience. The program facilitates ample networking opportunities with hospitals and physicians across Wyoming and with the Wyoming Medical Society.  All students receive general career advising for all four years and specialty advising leading up to residency match applications from UWSOM career and specialty advisors.

The University of Washington School of Medicine is a highly rated medical institution, and Wyoming WWAMI was by far the most economical option for my medical training, thanks to the State of Wyoming’s generosity. It also allowed me to stay in Wyoming for the early part of my training, which was an added benefit unique to the program.
