UWs Big Event Volunteer Program to Have Safeguards in Place This Fall

The eighth annual The Big Event is planned this fall with a number of changes being implemented to minimize the risks of spreading the COVID-19 virus to Laramie community members and University of Wyoming volunteers.

UW’s Service, Leadership and Community Engagement (SLCE) office is scheduled to host the communitywide service event Saturday, Oct. 10.

Through service-oriented activities, The Big Event promotes campus and community unity. UW students come together for one day to express their gratitude for the support from the surrounding community. This event is free to the Laramie community, and for students and alumni.

The SLCE office will accept job requests beginning Tuesday, Sept. 1, through the website at www.uwyo.edu/bigevent, or by calling the SLCE office at (307) 766-3117 or emailing slce@uwyo.edu. Job requests can be submitted through Monday, Sept. 28, or when the capacity for job requests is reached.

While additional changes may be necessary as this event approaches, key changes already in place include:

-- Only outdoor jobs that allow for social distancing will be accepted.

-- The overall number of jobs accepted will be reduced to allow for greater safety oversight.

-- Volunteers and community members will be required to wear masks and practice social distancing for the duration of the event.

-- Students, faculty and staff participants will be required to comply with UW’s COVID-19 policy, including symptom checks and practicing social distancing when participating in university-recognized activities.

-- A SLCE staff member or volunteer will perform a site check before a job request is accepted and contact community members who submit job requests.
