A University of Wyoming professor who has published extensively on the visual culture of women’s activism worldwide will speak Thursday, Dec. 2, at UW.

Colleen Denney, a professor of art history, and gender and women’s studies, will discuss her latest book, “The Suffrage Photography of Lena Connell: Creating a Cult of Great Women Leaders in Britain, 1908-1914.”

Her talk, which is free and open to the public, will be at 4 p.m. in Room 506 of Coe Library. The event also will be livestreamed on Zoom. To attend the event via Zoom, register at www.uwyo.edu/libraries. The University Store will have copies of her book available for purchase after the talk.

Denney has published comprehensively on portraits of women in Victorian and contemporary culture, including a book on Diana, Princess of Wales, and one on scandalous women in the Victorian period.

She has been researching British women in the suffrage movement since 2005. Her new book from McFarland & Co. Inc., Publishers examines the career of Connell, a photographer and Edwardian suffragist.

The book discusses Connell’s body of portraits within the British suffrage movement’s propagandistic efforts and its goals of sophisticated, professional representations of its members. It includes all of her known portraits of suffragists through 1914.

“Connell provides us, in this book, with key examples of brave women who are incredibly inspiring for the upcoming generations of activists,” Denney says.
