Seidel Launches UW Presidential Scholarly Achievement Awards for Faculty

A new program established by University of Wyoming President Ed Seidel will provide annual awards recognizing scholarly achievement by UW faculty members.

The Presidential Scholarly Achievement Awards kick off this spring in two categories:

-- The Presidential Scholarly Achievement Award for tenured faculty at associate or full professor ranks who have demonstrated significant achievement in scholarship. This will be a cash award of $2,500. Each year will focus on different colleges/disciplines, starting this year with the arts, humanities and social sciences.

-- The Presidential Scholarly Achievement Award for promising early-career faculty -- untenured faculty at the assistant or associate professor ranks who show significant promise for scholarship. The award of $5,000 will be used as a discretionary fund to support the advancement of the professor’s scholarship, spent as determined by the faculty member.

“As we strive to reach new levels of excellence in fulfilling our land-grant mission for Wyoming, it’s crucial that we celebrate and reward our high-achieving faculty members,” Seidel says. “These awards are just one of the ways we intend to show our commitment to our outstanding faculty members.”

In this first year of the awards program, five awards will be given in the category for tenured associate or full professors -- devoted to the arts, humanities and social sciences. In the second category for untenured faculty at the assistant or associate professor level, each college will have one award to distribute, with one exception -- the current College of Arts and Sciences will have two.

The colleges each will develop their own processes to determine their awardees. The Office of the President will cover the cost of the awards, and each awardee will receive a plaque. Plans call for the first awardees to be recognized at the president’s upcoming commencement dinner.

For questions, faculty should contact their deans or call Mandy Gifford at (307) 766-6476 or email mandyj@uwyo.edu.
