UW College of Engineering and Applied Science Graduates First Process Control Minor Class

The first two University of Wyoming College of Engineering and Applied Science Department of Chemical Engineering students with minors in process control were part of the university’s spring 2022 graduating class.

Andrew Anderson, of Laramie, and Mike Wilde, of Green River, completed the minor focused on training and research in the realms of control engineering, instrumentation, simulation, and design and construction of process control systems.

There are 20 other current students minoring in process control.

Anderson and Wilde say the advanced concepts to which they were exposed throughout the minor curriculum will provide career opportunities.

The interdisciplinary minor is composed of courses from chemical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical and energy systems engineering, and computer science. It includes such courses as “Chemical Process Analysis,” “Signals and Systems” and “Computer Security.”

“The process control minor provides a solid foundation for understanding concepts germane to industry here in Wyoming and throughout the world,” says John Tatarko, associate professor of practice in the Department of Chemical Engineering. “We look forward to the upcoming construction of our Advanced Process Simulator by PiControl Solutions and Siemens LLC, as it will give our students training in total plant operation and control. This training tool is the crown jewel of our curriculum upgrade and the backbone for our upcoming online certificate in process control and instrumentation.”

“As a department, we’re excited to provide this opportunity to the students,” says Patrick Johnson, Department of Chemical Engineering head. “The skill set and experiences they derive from this suite of courses and labs position them well for opportunities in a wide range of growing industries, as evidenced by how highly sought after our first graduates in this program were.”
