UW Hosts Six Visiting Fellows From Uzbekistan in Spring Semester

The University of Wyoming has been selected as a host institution for the spring Faculty Enrichment Program (FEP) by the American Councils for International Education. The U.S. Embassy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, funds the program.

The FEP offers university instructors from Uzbekistan the opportunity to enhance their pedagogical skills and professional disciplinary expertise. While in the FEP, fellows engage in curriculum development, explore alternative teaching methodologies, expand their knowledge in their fields and gather new teaching materials.

This spring, the FEP placed and provided fellowships to 40 university instructors from Uzbekistan to serve as visiting faculty on a semester-long professional enrichment program at a U.S. institution of higher education. UW’s Global Engagement Office (WyoGlobal) received the highest number -- six -- of faculty fellows.

The visiting faculty fellows are from different disciplines and universities in Uzbekistan, including current partners from Tashkent and Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The fellows will work closely with their UW mentors and WyoGlobal FEP coordinators during the spring semester.

Throughout their stay at UW, fellows observe courses, attend academic conferences and participate in webinars. Fellows may be invited to present lectures or co-teach classes at their host departments. Through structured opportunities to engage with students and faculty, fellows will significantly enhance their understanding of the higher education system in the U.S.

As the host office, WyoGlobal is collaborating with five UW departments and seven faculty members in hosting the FEP fellows:

-- Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources Dean John Koprowski and Assistant Professor of Practice Sara Ghezzi will host Sanjar Jumanazarov, a lecturer from Silk Road International University of Tourism and Cultural Heritage.

-- School of Computing Director Gabrielle Allen will host Charos Khidirova, an associate professor from Tashkent University of Information Technologies.

-- College of Business Department of Economics Associate Professor Alexandre Skiba will host Murodullo Bazarov, a lecturer from Westminster International University’s School of Business of Economics, and Markhabo Saidova, an associate professor from the Tashkent Institute of Finance.

-- WyoGlobal English Language Center’s Petra Heinz and College of Education Associate Professor Amy Roberts will host Nodira Ruzmetova, a lecturer and head of the General Philology Department at Urgench State Pedagogical Institute.

-- Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Assistant Professor Nga Nguyen will host Uchkun Mirzaev, a senior lecturer and head of the International Department at Jizzakh Polytechnic Institute.

FEP participants are encouraged to forge relationships between U.S. host institutions and their home institutions. While in the program, FEP fellows serve as cultural and academic resources, sharing information about their home countries with U.S. faculty, students and community members. By fostering contact between Uzbek faculty and their U.S. counterparts, the FEP aims to contribute to mutual understanding, deepen educational ties and foster professional networks between the U.S and Uzbekistan.
