Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City Vice President to Speak at UW April 11

Nicholas Sly, vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City -- and regional economist for Wyoming, Colorado and northern New Mexico -- will give a free public talk Tuesday, April 11, at the University of Wyoming College of Business.

His discussion, part of the College of Business’ Speaker Series, is at 5 p.m. in the Scarlett Auditorium. The event will be a fireside chat format with Sly and UW College of Business Dean Scott Beaulier, followed by a question-and-answer session.

Sly works closely with the reserve branch’s board of directors and is responsible for briefing the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City on conditions in the Denver branch’s region. Sly has a Ph.D. in economics from Michigan State University. Before joining the Federal Reserve Bank in 2015, he was an associate professor of economics at the University of Oregon.

“There could not be a better time to bring a Federal Reserve Bank economist to campus. We are seeing high inflation, rising interest rates and bank instability,” Beaulier says. “I can’t wait to sit down with Dr. Sly to make sense out of what we are witnessing in the economy right now.”

Sasha Skiba, chair of the UW Department of Economics and an associate professor, has heard Sly discuss his academic work and policy analysis and says his UW talk will be beneficial.

“This will be a unique opportunity for our students and the UW community at large to learn from Dr. Sly’s insightful perspectives on the state of our regional economy,” Skiba says. “His engaging presentation is not to be missed.”

Sly’s visit concludes this year’s College of Business Speaker Series, which is supported by a generous gift from the Dimitrios Smyrnios family.
