The University of Wyoming Art Museum will host visiting artist Jenene Nagy for an artist talk Wednesday, April 26, and a two-part workshop Friday and Saturday, April 28-29.

Nagy will discuss her work, process and inspiration behind her UW exhibition, “While navigating the distance around the sun,” at 6 p.m. Her talk, part of the Salvagio Art Talk Series, will take place in the museum galleries. A reception will precede her talk at 5:30 p.m. The reception and talk are free and open to the public.

Through artist-led prompts and creative experiments, participants of Nagy’s workshop will develop personal symbols that honor and celebrate their identities. The first part of the workshop will be Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the UW Art Museum. Part two will take place Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon in the Phoenix Ballroom of the Laramie Plains Civic Center, located at 710 E. Garfield St.

The two-part workshop is free and open to the public, but space is limited. Registration is required. To register, click here.

Nagy is a Southern California-based artist whose work is a practice of repetition and devotion. Intricately folded paper, layers of graphite or individually dotted grids provide a temporal experience for both artist and viewer. The subtleties entice viewers to engage in what Nagy describes as “the simple act of looking, to acknowledge their place in time as they contemplate an accrual.” To behold this transformation of materials into ritualized objects is one way to exist while navigating the distance around the sun, she says.

Nagy’s exhibition will open Saturday, April 22, at the UW Art Museum. Nineteen of her works -- ranging from her smaller grid series to expansive works of folded paper with graphite and silver, up to nearly 20 feet in length -- will be on display. The exhibition will feature Nagy’s newest work, “From stars 5,” which was completed this year and never shown before. “While navigating the distance around the sun” will be on view through July 29.

For more information about the talk and workshop, call Will Bowling, education and public programs coordinator at the UW Art Museum, at (307) 766-3496 or email wbowling@uwyo.edu.
