UW Fossil Fish Festival Offers Activities for All Ages May 6

Several activities for all ages are planned during the Fossil Fish Festival Saturday, May 6, at the University of Wyoming Geological Museum.

Activities, free and open to the public, are from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

“Join us for some kid-friendly, educational and interactive activities highlighting Wyoming’s world-renowned fossil fish deposits from the Green River formation quarried by Kemmerer,” says Laura Vietti, UW Geological Museum and collections manager.

Activities include preparing fossil fish, participating in an earthquake activity and seeing the unveiling of the new “Dawn Horse: Hyracotherium.”

“Participating in activities like those offered at the Fossil Fish Fest can introduce participants to fields of science beyond their current experiences and connect things learned in a science classroom -- recently or years ago -- with real-world science,” says Megan Candelaria, UW Science Kitchen co-director. “For K-12 students, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) outreach can connect students to real-world scientists, who may break their preconceived notion of who a scientist is and what they do, which helps them envision themselves as scientists.”

The UW Geological Museum, the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS), the UW Department of Physics and Astronomy, and the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Science Kitchen are sponsors of the event.

“Wyoming geology is fascinating, and events like the Fossil Fish Festival offer an opportunity for us to share it with the public,” says Christina George, WSGS outreach manager. “We are looking forward to this festival and getting to engage with the community.”
