Wyoming Wildlife Fellowship Program Adds Five New UW Undergraduates to Cohort

Five incoming or current University of Wyoming undergraduate students are the latest cohort selections for the Wyoming Wildlife Fellowship Program, which supports students pursuing careers in wildlife and fisheries sciences.

Students selected are Miles DeAntoni, from Centennial; Colter Harvey, of Laramie; Ty Hults, from Knob Noster, Mo.; Hannah Qualm, of Buffalo; and Madeline Sorensen, from Cody.

The Wyoming Wildlife Fellowship Program, a joint initiative between UW and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, is a rigorous program that helps participants gain the technical skills and knowledge to shape Wyoming’s wildlife and fisheries sciences now and in the future.

Applications for the program began early this year, with interviews in late March. Applicants were interviewed by UW and Game and Fish personnel and selected from a highly competitive pool of undergraduates in the natural resources field.

“It is always challenging to select just a few applicants to accept into the program, and this year was no exception,” says Rhiannon Jakopak, an assistant research scientist in the UW Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, who helps to coordinate the fellowship program. “We are delighted to bring on the new fellows and to get to work with them over the remainder of their undergraduate degrees.”

Each fellow is studying wildlife and fisheries biology and management or a related natural resources subject. Over the next several years, students will participate in a semester seminar about the wildlife field; hold two paid summer internships with the Game and Fish Department; and participate and volunteer for various relevant experiences and opportunities in the wildlife field.

Fellows receive a semester scholarship of about $3,000.

The 2023 cohort will join 10 other current fellows: Bri Agenbroad, of Manteca, Calif.; Steven Antonio, of Grand Junction, Colo.; Sarah Doyle, from O’Fallon, Ill.; Macy Jacobson, of Lander; Dani Jones, of Gillette; Ryan Loghry, from Casper; Ryen Nielsen, of Nyssa, Ore.; Adam Novak, from Colorado Springs, Colo.; Olivia Poore, of Douglassville, Pa.; and Kayla Wenzler, from Denver, Pa.

Applications for the next cohort will be taken in spring 2024.
