Jenna Shim, the associate dean for academic affairs and graduate studies in the University of Wyoming’s College of Education, has been appointed as the college’s John P. “Jack” Ellbogen Interim Dean.

She succeeds Scott Thomas, who is leaving UW to become president of Sterling College in Craftsbury Common, Vt.

Shim, a professor in the School of Teacher Education, has served as associate dean for the past three years. She joined the UW faculty in 2009 and also has served as associate director in the School of Education; program coordinator for the English as a second language (ESL) graduate program in the School of Teacher Education; and founder of the annual Wyoming ESL and DLI (dual language immersion) Conference.

“We are grateful that Dr. Shim has agreed to lead the College of Education during this critical time of transition,” says UW Provost and Executive Vice President Kevin Carman. “We are extremely confident in her leadership and look forward to further progress in the efforts and initiatives that have been undertaken under Dean Thomas’ leadership.”

Shim’s honors at UW include the 2011-13 Mary Garland Early Career Fellowship; the 2012-13 College of Education Award for Outstanding Teaching; the 2017-18 College of Education Award for Outstanding Research and Scholarship; the 2017-19 Patricia McClurg Education Fellowship; and the 2018-19 College of Education Faculty Award for Outstanding Service to the Education Profession. She also was awarded the Everett D. and Elizabeth Lantz Distinguished Professorship in Education from 2018-2020.

“I am truly humbled and grateful for the incredible opportunity to serve as the interim dean of the College of Education,” Shim says. “Over the course of my 14-year tenure within the college, I have been fortunate to experience a profound sense of fulfillment and purpose. As I assume new responsibilities, I am thrilled to collaborate with colleagues across the college, university and state, working together to foster a culture of collaboration, innovation and academic excellence. I eagerly anticipate the journey ahead and the collective efforts we will undertake to shape the future of education.”

Shim earned a B.A. in piano performance at California State University (1994) and an M.M. in piano performance from Manhattan School of Music (1996). She received her teaching certificate in TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) from the University of California-Los Angeles (2001); and an M.S. in literacy education (2006), a CAS in literacy education (2007) and a Ph.D. in language and literacy education (2009), all from the University at Albany, State University of New York.
