UW Center on Aging Offers Free Educational Help to Caregivers This Month

The University of Wyoming Center on Aging (WyCOA) will offer free educational opportunities later this month to caregivers of people living with dementia.

The online Zoom programs will be presented in a four-part series titled “Living in Long Term Care Today” and are designed to provide valuable, practical help for caregivers, family members and friends of people living with dementia throughout the Rocky Mountain region.

Beginning May 16, the programs will be held during consecutive Tuesdays at 1 p.m. Session topics are “Maintaining Engagement”; “Boosting Health and Safety for Your Loved Ones”; “Honoring and Understanding End of Life”; and “COVID-19: What You Need to Know Now.” Registration is now open.

The four-part series is part of ongoing efforts of Wyoming Dementia Together, a regional, multistate team of experienced dementia care professionals, operating under WyCOA, dedicated to supporting those who care for people with dementia.

The group was organized two years ago and offers free, biweekly Zoom programming in areas such as using community resources, building and strengthening support networks, and learning how to manage stress and other challenging situations.

The next session, “An Interdisciplinary Team Approach to Supporting You and Your Loved One -- Strengthening Our Resiliency as a Caregiver,” will be Wednesday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m.

Later this year, WyCOA and its partners will offer in-person help through its “Dementia on the Road” series. Visits are scheduled in Cheyenne Wednesday, May 31, including a live online broadcast, with stops in Gillette Wednesday, Oct. 4; Riverton Thursday, Oct. 5; and Rock Springs Friday, Oct. 6.

The events will feature regional expert panel discussions of dementia and ways to access local professional help. Vendor space is available.

The mission of WyCOA is to optimize the health and well-being of Wyoming’s older residents and their caregivers through interagency partnerships; basic and applied research; community education; and clinical training and services.

For more information about WyCOA and other learning opportunities, call (307) 766-2829, email wycoa@uwyo.edu, or visit the website at www.uwyo.edu/wycoa.
