UW in the News

January 3, 2023

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Kyiv Post interviewed UW Department of Economics Chair Alexandre Skiba about Russia’s collapsing economy amid the continuing crisis in Ukraine. Skiba said Russia will face an unsettling economic future unless Moscow quickly changes course -- something that, at this late point, it may not even be able to do.

UW’s Black 14 football players were featured in BlackFacts, a website that “informs and teaches Black history.” The article detailed how the players were dismissed from the 1969 football team by Coach Lloyd Eaton after stating that they wanted to protest for social change.

CBS News Nigeria published UW’s release noting that Kara Brighton Fornstrom, a Cheyenne natural resources attorney and regulatory policy expert, has been hired as the new director of the Center for Energy Regulation and Policy Analysis in the UW School of Energy Resources.

A recent feature article titled “A ‘real man’ in a dress” was published in The Washington Post that focused on an original play written by Gregory Hinton. The play is based on the remarkable life of Wyoming educator, Vietnam veteran, activist and cross-dresser Larry “Sissy” Goodwin, who died in 2020. UW’s American Heritage Center sponsored a nine-city tour of the production last semester in Wyoming.

Clear+Vivid,” a podcast hosted by actor Alan Alda, featured UW molecular biologist Thomas Boothby, who discussed the science and his research behind the microscopic creatures tardigrades, also known as water bears. Boothby revealed that tardigrades are nature’s ultimate survivors that can withstand a number of extreme conditions, and they hold secrets that may make vaccines more available and may help astronauts live in space.

Steve Lupien, director of UW’s Center for Blockchain and Digital Innovation, discussed in an Associated Press article the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX. Lupien said in the article, which was published by The Lincoln Journal Star, that “FTX would not have happened if it was a Wyoming company.” He said the Cowboy State knew that appropriate regulation was necessary when starting down the crypto path five years ago.

The Weather Channel included a quote from Max Gilbraith, the UW planetarium’s coordinator, in a year-end roundup of the biggest space stories of 2022 that was posted on its website. Gilbraith noted NASA’s efforts to change the course of an asteroid.

For the first time, researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey’s Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at UW, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and many other partners have published a geonarrative of a mule deer’s record-breaking journey. Buckrail published UW’s release noting the doe’s 480-mile round-trip journey stretches from the greater Yellowstone ecosystem to southern Wyoming’s Red Desert.

The Gillette News Record posted that two local students recently graduated from UW’s online Master of Science program in the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing. Twenty-five students earned their degrees during the fall semester, the highest number the program has seen to date.

Chad Baldwin, UW’s associate vice president for communications and marketing, spoke with Sheridan Media about UW College of Engineering and Physical Sciences students who are working on a solar-powered home near Lander for an international competition to design zero-energy buildings.

A WalletHub column featured UW finance Assistant Professor Tim Zhang, who offered useful tips on how to obtain a personal loan even though a credit score may hover around 600. Zhang said many lenders require a minimum of lower-than-600 credit score to secure such loans.
