UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Coal Valley News, in Danville, W.Va., published an article noting that last year, a UW proposal was selected to receive an $800,000 research award from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Nuclear Energy University Program for an environmental justice project. The article focused on how environmental justice concerns persist as West Virginia looks at nuclear expansion.

The Wildlife Society featured UW Department of Zoology and Physiology graduate student Jeff Dolphin’s master’s degree research on wolves and feral dogs in Mongolia. Wildlife conservation efforts by Maria Vittoria Mazzamuto, a research scientist at UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, and John Koprowski, dean of the Haub School, also were highlighted.

Caroline Kirsch, director of osteopathic education at UW’s Family Medicine Residency Program in Casper, provided comments for an article titled “Transgender People in Rural America Struggle to Find Doctors Willing or Able to Provide Care.” The article appeared in Physician’s Weekly.

Laramie Live reported that Credit Summit ranked UW No. 5 on its list of the “25 Most Affordable Colleges in the U.S.”

The Casper Star-Tribune reported that UW recently launched the Firearms Research Center, which is housed in the UW College of Law. Bearing Arms and Big Horn Radio Network published UW’s release on the center. Wyoming Public Radio carried a similar story.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed Michael Wade, associate director of UW’s Student Educational Opportunity, who oversees UW’s branch of GEAR UP Wyoming, for a piece titled “Low income high school graduation rates are dropping after 2020 school closures.”

KUNC carried a Mountain West News Bureau-produced story on how Native American tribes in the Mountain West are still waiting for more than 11,500 of their ancestors’ remains to be made available for return. Nicole Crawford, director of the UW Art Museum and co-founder of the Stealing Culture Project, was interviewed for the piece. She said many museums don’t have staff dedicated to reporting remains in their possession and engaging with tribes.

UW College of Education faculty members Jonathan Carrier and Mark Perkins published a paper describing the development of an interactive dashboard that combines data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Phys.org published UW’s release on the dashboard.

Laramie Live and Buckrail published UW’s release noting that a team of UW students is one of seven student teams selected to advance to the second phase of NASA’s 2023 Micro-g Neutral Buoyancy Experiment Design Teams engineering design challenge.

SweetwaterNOW published UW’s release announcing that 18 UW students were awarded scholarships by the U.S. Department of State to study abroad in 2022-23. The Gillette News Record published a similar story.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle and SweetwaterNOW published UW’s release announcing that Melanie Hornbeck, an outreach librarian at the Laramie County Library System in Cheyenne, and Jennifer Hayward, a Title 1 reading teacher at Pinedale Elementary School, are the co-winners of the 2022 Carol Mead Leaders in Literacy Award from the UW Literacy Research Center and Clinic Outreach Advisory Board.

WyoToday Media published UW’s release announcing that IMPACT 307, a business development program of the university, is accepting applications for the second annual Fremont County Start-Up Challenge.

Wyoming News Now published UW’s release on how the university’s Wyoming Community Navigator Program is expanding its services to help small-business owners succeed.

County 10 and WyoToday Media published UW’s release noting that UW Extension will host the 39th annual Fremont County Farm and Ranch Days in Riverton next month.
