State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle and The Casper Star-Tribune noted that the State Loan and Investment Board approved a grant to support development of the world’s largest and most advanced vertical farming research center in Laramie. Rick Fisher, a senior lecturer in the UW Department of English, spoke with Wyoming Public Radio on what artificial intelligence means for the future of education. He says the existence of ChatGPT -- a new application that builds from a large language model -- might require teachers to rethink essay assignments, but it has not changed what education is fundamentally about.

Coal Zoom published UW’s release noting that the university will receive $10.5 million from the U.S. Department of Energy for a research and development project advancing the wide-scale deployment of carbon management technologies to reduce carbon dioxide pollution.

UW researchers will be part of a University of Colorado study to better understand high-alpine ecosystems in a warming world. The Niwot Ridge Long Term Ecological Research Project recently received a new $7.65 million, six-year grant from the National Science Foundation to continue the research, according to CU Boulder Today.

The UW College of Law’s George Mocsary co-wrote an article that appeared in The Federalist titled “Fact-Check: Mass Shootings Actually Increased During Federal ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban.” He and co-author Gregory Wallace are law professors who teach and write extensively on firearms and Second Amendment issues.

Wyoming Public Radio noted that the UW College of Education is planning a new Master Educator Competency Program for teachers in the state, specifically for those teaching in rural areas. The goal is to create a process for revolutionizing teacher preparation and bringing professional development to educators in ways that respect their time and needs. Austin Madson, an assistant professor in UW’s Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center, teamed up with 13 other scientists from Hawaii and the mainland to sift through data going back to 1982 for a climate change study on the island. Yahoo! News republished the article that originally appeared in The Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

The Laramie Boomerang noted that a UW student created an online platform -- Campus Heartbeat -- that presents real-time, daily campus energy consumption and emissions data to the public. Luke Macy said the goal behind Campus Heartbeat is to support education, research, operations and sustainability outreach at UW.

The Powell Tribune reported that IMPACT Park County has opened the application period for the Park County Start-Up Challenge. The competition will promote and encourage entrepreneurship in the Big Horn Basin. IMPACT 307 is a business development program of UW’s Office of Research and Economic Development.

Receding glaciers in the northern Antarctic Peninsula are uncovering and reexposing black moss that provides radiocarbon kill dates for the vegetation. Dulcinea Groff, a postdoctoral research associate in the UW Department of Geology and Geophysics, led a study that determined the black moss kill dates coincide with evidence of glacier advances from other studies that found such events occurred 1,300, 800 and 200 calibrated years prior to 1950. Science-related websites EurekAlert! and Phys.org published UW’s release on the findings.

Western Ag Reporter published UW’s release noting that Bledar Bisha, an associate professor of animal science in the UW College of Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources, was recently named a Wyoming Excellence Chair.

Oil City News published UW’s release announcing that mini-grants for Wyoming child care centers seeking to encourage physical activity and healthy eating habits are available through UW Extension’s Cent$ible Nutrition Program.

Jackie Joyner-Kersee, an Olympic gold medalist, spoke on the UW campus last week to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX. The Gillette News Record published UW’s announcement, and WyoSports covered her discussion.
