UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

The New York Times interviewed Terry Deshler, a UW professor emeritus of atmospheric science, for an article about several balloon sightings in North American skies the past couple of weeks. The article noted that, at any given time, thousands of balloons are above Earth, many of which are used in the U.S. by government agencies, military forces, independent researchers and hobbyists. The New York Post used Deshler’s comments for a similar article.

A major gift from Joe Ricketts’ Jackson Fork Ranch will help UW support environmental stewardship and conservation across Wyoming, with an initial focus on the greater Yellowstone ecosystem. The Casper Star-Tribune published UW’s release noting that Ricketts is collaborating with the university to create the Jackson Fork Ranch-University of Wyoming Research Project. Statewide conservation efforts will be the focus.

Cowboy State Daily interviewed George Mocsary, a UW College of Law professor and director of the university’s new Firearms Research Center. Mocsary, a nationally recognized Second Amendment rights expert, said bringing multiple points of view to the table for discussion and research regarding guns and gun control will help keep misconceptions from spreading. UW President Ed Seidel discussed the Wyoming Innovation Partnership with the UW Board of Trustees last week. He said Wyoming’s institutions of higher learning have committed to creating programming that will have an impact on economic development across the state, according to a Laramie Boomerang article.

WyoFile interviewed UW economist Rob Godby for an article on a bill that would build on existing requirements that utilities looking to retire a coal unit first try to extend its life by adding expensive carbon capture, utilization and sequestration technologies and possibly passing the cost onto customers.

UW’s School of Energy Resources and the Wyoming Business Council recently announced that they intend to submit a proposal for a Wyoming Direct Air Capture Hub Pilot Center. Oil City News reported that the letter of intent describes how they would determine whether the hub pilot center is feasible. The proposal is for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Four Regional Direct Air Capture Hubs program, which is part of the Investment in Infrastructure and Jobs Act.

Cowboy State Daily solicited comments from Jim Ahern, a UW biological anthropologist and vice provost for graduate education, for an article titled “No Cars, No Energy, No Mating: Has the Environmental Movement Turned Anti-Human?”

Laramie lawyer and journalist Phil White will give a presentation on “The History of African Americans at the University of Wyoming 1886-1962” this week as part of the Albany County Historical Society’s meeting, according to Laramie Live. White, a UW graduate from Cheyenne, is a historical expert on UW’s Black 14.

Sheridan Media published UW’s release announcing that the Wyoming Procurement Technical Assistance Center is changing its name to Wyoming APEX Accelerator. The U.S. Department of Defense is the program’s new federal funding partner. Sheridan Media also noted that Wyoming Dementia Together, a caregiver network in the UW Center on Aging, will host a program this week on effective ways to communicate with a loved one living with dementia.

Kelli Mosteller, the executive director of Harvard University’s Native American Program, is the speaker for the Bruce Richardson Lecture in the Humanities at UW this week, according to Laramie Live, which published UW’s release. Laramie Live also noted that corporate whistleblower Cynthia Cooper will speak in the UW College of Business’ Scarlett Auditorium this week.

WyoToday Media published UW’s release noting that the Wyoming State Science Fair for middle and high school students is scheduled early next month on the UW campus.

UW Extension and Central Wyoming College will host the state’s first Harvest Wyoming small farm symposium in Riverton next month. The Saratoga Sun published UW Extension’s release noting that farmers and ag professionals will lead workshops on topics including small livestock, mushrooms, cut flowers, insect management, marketing and finances.

Wyoming News Now published UW’s release announcing that the UW College of Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources will lead a seminar on the latest technological innovations in agriculture at Eastern Wyoming College early next month.
