    UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

A WyoSports commentary noted that UW’s Black 14 received the NCAA’s Inspiration Award at the NCAA Convention in San Antonio, Texas, last month. The honor recognizes college athletes “who, when confronted with a life-altering situation, used perseverance, dedication and determination to overcome the event and who now serve as a role model to give hope and inspiration to others in similar situations.”

UW’s Chip Kobulnicky was a member of a large team of astronomers -- led by the Carnegie Institution for Science -- that discovered an unusual planetary system in which a large gas giant planet orbits a small red dwarf star called TOI-5205. ScienceDaily noted the findings, which were published in The Astronomical Journal, challenge long-held ideas about planet formation.

Wyoming Public Radio (WPR) interviewed Melissa Hunter, the UW School of Pharmacy’s Drug Information Center director, to understand just how dangerous fentanyl can be. Fentanyl-related deaths in Wyoming have been on the rise since 2015, according to the WPR report.

In an article that originally appeared in The Wyoming Tribune Eagle, Jeff Lockwood, a UW natural sciences and humanities professor, was interviewed about the debut of his new podcast titled “Once Upon a Meadow.” The podcast leads children through a community of woodland creatures. Each episode presents a conflict that children ages 4 to 9 years old can understand and learn from. Yahoo! News republished the article.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported that Wyoming Future Business Leaders of America is partnering with the UW College of Business to host the organization’s annual leadership conference on the university’s campus next month.

WPR interviewed Professor Caroline McCracken-Flesher, director of the UW in Scotland program, for an article about the “UW in Scotland” celebration, which took place last week. Events included lectures, exhibitions, a film festival and a fundraiser that featured traditional food and bagpipe players.

Chad Baldwin, UW associate vice president for communications and marketing, spoke with Sheridan Media about UW Professor Danny Dale being part of a multinational team of researchers using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to get a first look at star formation, gas and dust in nearby galaxies with unprecedented resolution at infrared wavelengths.

County 10, Sheridan Media and WyoToday Media published UW’s release announcing that 100 outstanding high school seniors from across Wyoming have been selected to receive the 2023 Trustees’ Scholars Award -- the university’s top academic scholarship. WyoToday Media also published UW’s release noting that UW members of the Cap and Gown Chapter of Mortar Board recently honored their “Top Profs.” Members of the senior honor society selected professors who have positively influenced their lives at UW.

A Community Action Poverty Simulation program -- organized by UW’s Service, Leadership and Community Engagement office -- was held last Saturday, according to WPR. The experience helped to sensitize the public to the everyday realities of life in poverty and showcased community resources for people with low incomes.
