UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

NASA reported that UW is a recipient of an Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) grant that will provide a total of more than $10.8 million across 15 institutions nationwide over three years to support scientific and technical research. UW will receive nearly $750,000.

UW researchers’ study of how microscopic creatures called tardigrades survive extreme conditions has led to a breakthrough that could eventually make life-saving treatments available to people where refrigeration is not possible. Interesting Engineering, World Pharma Today, Technology Networks and DoveMed were among media outlets publishing UW’s release.

Sheridan Media interviewed Chad Baldwin, UW’s associate vice president for communications and marketing, about UW Assistant Professor Thomas Boothby’s latest tardigrade research.

UW law Professor Jason Robison was interviewed for a Civil Eats story that New Mexico In Depth published on its website. The piece focused on a U.S. Supreme Court case that could reshape Indigenous water rights in the Southwest. Robison teaches courses in water law and policy at UW.

The Supreme Court of the United States noted that UW law Professor George Mocsary co-filed a brief with Brian Knight, a senior research fellow at the Mercatus Center, urging the court to reverse the lower court’s decision on NRA v. Vullo. Mocsary, co-founder and director of UW’s Firearms Research Center, and Knight argued that regulators cannot abuse their legitimate power to advance a political agenda that potentially undermines both the First and Second Amendment rights of the regulated person or entity.

UW will receive $120 million to complete long-planned construction projects, and many university employees will receive pay raises as part of the supplemental budget approved during the Legislature’s general session. Sheridan Media and Wyoming News Now published UW’s announcement.

Fred McLaughlin, director of UW’s Center for Economic Geology Research, was interviewed by Oregon Capital Chronicle for an article that focused on how scientists are pursuing a project in eastern Oregon that could stem climate change. He commented on how officials plan to funnel carbon dioxide emissions from a natural gas plant into the earth, storing them there forever.

The Powell Tribune reported that UW alumna Aura Sunada Newlin, originally from Riverton, is the new Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation executive director. The foundation preserves the site between Powell and Cody where approximately 14,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated from 1942-45.

UW researchers are assisting Wyoming Game and Fish Department biologists on the status and health of a mule deer herd in western Wyoming that has had to endure a harsh winter, reported The Pinedale Roundup.

E&E News added comments from UW law Professor Sam Kalen for an article that focused on a criminal trespass case against four out-of-state hunters who allegedly trespassed on public land in the southwestern quadrant of the Cowboy State. The case is set for jury trial in June in the U.S. District Court for the District of Wyoming.

Laramie Live and KNEB published UW’s release announcing that UW Extension will host an educational field day and private treaty sale at the Laramie Research and Extension Center Saturday, April 1, as part of its inaugural High Altitude Bull Test and Sale. The Cheyenne Post published another UW Extension piece on its collaboration with the Wyoming Community Navigator Program on a new online resource hub for rural entrepreneurs across the state. And, The Powell Tribune noted new Wyoming legislation that recognizes 4-H as a cocurricular activity, allowing its members to obtain excused absences for participation in 4-H programs.

Five businesses have been selected as the finalists in the inaugural Park County Start-Up Challenge. The Cody Enterprise published UW’s release noting that the competition is sponsored by IMPACT 307 -- a business development program of UW.
