Dr. Izabela Ragan is a veterinary virologist specializing in emerging and zoonotic infectious diseases. With extensive experience in high-containment (BSL-3) research, she has worked with high-consequence viral pathogens, including African Swine Fever virus, Rift Valley fever virus, Zika virus, influenza, mpox, MERS-CoV, and SARS-CoV-2.
Her research focuses on viral ecology, host-pathogen interactions, and the role of wildlife and domestic animals in disease transmission. She is dedicated to translational medicine, developing animal models, diagnostics, and vaccines for emerging viral threats.
A key area of her work is advancing a UV-light and riboflavin-based inactivation platform for vaccine and diagnostic development. This technology has shown promise as a vaccine platform for SARS-CoV-2, influenza, tuberculosis, and Leishmania. Through collaborations with academia, industry, and government agencies, Dr. Ragan applies a One Health approach to enhance global health security and combat infectious diseases affecting both animals and humans.
