Wyoming WWAMI Awards and Scholarships

Wyoming WWAMI has multiple scholarship opportunities for students at different stages of their medical education.

  1. Foundations Phase: For eligible first and second year Wyoming WWAMI students.
  2. Patient Care and Explore & Focus Phase: For eligible third and fourth year Wyoming WWAMI students.

Foundations Phase

The Paul W. Pheneger WWAMI Medical Education Scholarship is intended to assist non- traditional medical students in pursuit of their medical education. To be eligible for this scholarship award applicants must meet at least one of the following criterion: (1) students seeking admission to medical school after having a break of greater than 1 year since receiving their undergraduate degree and applying to medical school; (2) students seeking admission to medical school after having been employed in a non-medical career: (3) students seeking admission to medical school after having served in the military; and/or (4) students are completing or have completed a graduate degree.

  • Scholarship Award: Students selected for this scholarship will receive $10,000 (if one awardee) or $5,000 (if two awardees).
  • Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be enrolled in the Wyoming WWAMI medical education program and in good standing academically and interested in a medical career in primary care. Only incoming first year Wyoming WWAMI medical students are eligible for this scholarship.

The Frank R. Gruden and Dorothy M. Lawson Gruden were Wyoming connected philanthropists known primarily for their generous endowments supporting education, particularly in nursing, medicine, and teaching fields at the University of Wyoming.  To apply for this scholarship, applicants must be in good academic standing and submit a concise personal narrative demonstrating significant financial need during medical school. The narrative should detail the applicant’s financial challenges (e.g., tuition, living expenses, or loan burdens), how the challenges impacted your education, and any efforts the applicant made to address the challenges, while maintaining a clear connection to a commitment to medicine and service in Wyoming.

  • Scholarship Award: Students selected for this scholarship will receive $1000.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be enrolled in the Wyoming WWAMI medical education program and in good standing academically. Only first year Wyoming WWAMI medical students are eligible for this scholarship.

With the generous contributions of physicians from across the state, Wyoming Medical Society (WMS) Past President, Mike Jording MD, established a scholarship fund at the University of Wyoming to award to outstanding Wyoming WWAMI students who complete their first year of study. This is the Wyoming Medical Society’s way of saying thank you for choosing to commit to medicine, and more specifically to medicine in Wyoming. To apply for the WMS Centennial Scholarship please complete an application and a personal statement addressing how the first year of medical education has shaped and further defined the applicant’s interest in medicine and promoted a desire to return to Wyoming to practice.

  • Scholarship Award: Students selected for this scholarship will receive $1000.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be enrolled in the Wyoming WWAMI medical education program and in good standing academically. Only first year Wyoming WWAMI medical students are eligible for this scholarship.

The Howard Wilson WWAMI Excellence in Primary Care Award is intended to recognize Wyoming WWAMI medical students who demonstrate excellence or leadership in primary care specialties of family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine or obstetrics and gynecology are planning to return to practice primary care in Wyoming.  Preference will be granted to applicants who: (1) demonstrate leadership in a field of study or show specific interest pertaining to primary care, (2) have successfully completed the Rural Underserved Opportunity Program (RUOP) and have presented a primary care focused project at either a WWAMI-wide or national event and (3) provide a compelling plan to return to Wyoming to practice medicine.  The ranking of WWAMI Research Symposium may also be considered a factor when awarding this scholarship.

  • Scholarship Award: Students selected for this scholarship will receive $500.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be enrolled in the Wyoming WWAMI medical education program and in good standing academically and interested in a medical career in primary care. Only second year Wyoming WWAMI medical students are eligible for this scholarship.

The Wyoming WWAMI Pheneger Community Engagement Award is intended to recognize Wyoming WWAMI medical students who demonstrate community outreach and engagement activities that have an impact on the larger Wyoming community.  This award honors students whose efforts extend beyond the classroom to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Wyoming residents. Recipients exemplify the values of service, compassion, and innovation through projects or initiatives that strengthen connections between the Wyoming WWAMI medical education program and local communities. Preference will be granted to applicants who: (1) successfully developed and organized an impactful outreach activity for Wyoming community members (2) created an innovative community engagement activity for promoting health education in Wyoming, or (3) show sustained dedication to improving Wyoming community health and well-being.  Joint applications from multiple students are welcomed and will be considered.

  • Scholarship Award: Students selected for this scholarship will receive $500.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must meet be enrolled in the Wyoming WWAMI medical education program and in good standing academically. Only second year Wyoming WWAMI medical students are eligible for this scholarship.

The College of Health Sciences Dean's Office offers the Charles and Ruth Rile Scholarship for students who are alumni of the University of Wyoming who are enrolled in a University of Wyoming nursing program (graduate or undergraduate level) or are enrolled in the Wyoming WWAMI medical school.  This scholarship's selection process is conducted by the College of Health Sciences Dean's Scholarship Committee.

  • Scholarship Award: Students selected for this scholarship will receive $500.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be enrolled in the Wyoming WWAMI medical education program and an alumnus of the University of Wyoming. Only first or second year Wyoming WWAMI medical students are eligible for this scholarship.

The College of Health Sciences Dean's Office offers the Maertens Family Health Sciences Scholarship for Wyoming WWAMI students who are from Johnson County (Buffalo or Kaycee).  This scholarship's selection process is conducted by the College of Health Sciences Dean's Scholarship Committee.

  • Scholarship Award: Students selected for this scholarship can receive $1000 per year while enrolled in WWAMI.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be enrolled and in good standing in the Wyoming WWAMI medical education program and from Buffalo County, WY.   Students from all years of the WWAMI medical students are eligible for this scholarship.

 

 

Patient Care & Explore and Focus Phase

The Wyoming WWAMI Travel Scholarship Fund helps to support student travel expenses during their clinical and explore and focus phases of their medical education.  The purpose of the scholarship fund is to assist Wyoming WWAMI students to supplement travel and other related expenses during clinical rotations.    All Wyoming WWAMI students in their clinical or explore and focus phases of medical school are eligible.  To apply for the award, students must complete a scholarship application with requested supporting documentation regarding their clinical rotation schedules. Priority will be given to students doing rotations in Wyoming and/or travelling longer distances to or from the rotation site. Amount funded to each student each year will be at the discretion of the WWAMI director in collaboration with the WWAMI scholarship committee.

  • Scholarship Award: Students selected for this scholarship will receive $250 or the amount available in that academic year through the travel scholarship endowment. 
  • Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be enrolled in the Wyoming WWAMI medical education program in the clinical phase or explore and focus phase of the curriculum and in good standing academically. Only third- and fourth-year Wyoming WWAMI medical students are eligible for this scholarship.

Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence J. Cohen established the Outstanding Graduate in Pediatric Award to establish an annual award to the outstanding graduating Wyoming WWAMI student choosing a pediatrics residency. This is Dr. and Mrs. Cohen’s way of recognizing outstanding performance during medical school for a graduating WWAMI student who is entering a pediatrics residency and pursuing a career in pediatrics.  To apply for the Lawrence J. Cohen Outstanding Graduate in Pediatrics Award, applicants must complete the application and include a personal statement addressing how your experiences in the WWAMI medical education program supported your interest in pediatrics and helped to shape your future career goals in pediatrics. 

  • Scholarship Award: Students selected for this scholarship will receive $1000.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be enrolled in the Wyoming WWAMI medical education program and in good standing academically.  Only fourth year Wyoming WWAMI medical students who are entering a pediatrics residency are eligible for this scholarship.

In 2011, the Wyoming Academy of Family Physicians (WAFP) Board of Directors voted to establish an annual award to the outstanding graduating Wyoming WWAMI student choosing a family practice residency. This is WAFP’s way to recognize outstanding performance during medical school for a graduating WWAMI student who is entering a family medicine residency and pursuing a career in family medicine.  To apply for the WAFP Outstanding Family Medicine Graduate Award, applicants must complete an application and include a personal statement addressing how your experiences in the WWAMI medical education program supported your interest in family medicine and helped to shape your future career goals in family medicine. 

  • Scholarship Award: Students selected for this scholarship will receive $1000.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be enrolled in the Wyoming WWAMI medical education program and in good standing academically.  Only fourth year Wyoming WWAMI medical students who are entering a family medicine residency are eligible for this scholarship.

This is the Wyoming Medical Society’s way to recognize outstanding performance during medical school and as a way of saying thank you for choosing to commit to medicine, and more specifically to medicine in Wyoming.  To apply for the WMS Centennial Outstanding Graduate Award, applicants must complete an application and include a personal statement addressing how they successfully navigated the challenges of the WWAMI medical education program, highlighting key achievements, leadership roles, community service, and dedication to the program. Applicants should explain how these experiences fostered a strong commitment to return to Wyoming to practice medicine and your vision for contributing to its physician workforce.

  • Scholarship Award: Students selected for this scholarship will receive $1000.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be enrolled in the Wyoming WWAMI medical education program and in good standing academically.  Preference will be given to students who hold key leadership positions and perform well in the Foundations Phase, Clinical Care Phase, and Explore and Focus Phase. Only fourth year Wyoming WWAMI medical students are eligible for this scholarship.

The College of Health Sciences Dean's Office offers the Maertens Family Health Sciences Scholarship for Wyoming WWAMI students who are from Johnson County (Buffalo or Kaycee).  This scholarship's selection process is conducted by the College of Health Sciences Dean's Scholarship Committee.
