Network Mentorship
As members of the WY INBRE Network each Wyoming community college receives an annual
Network allocation to support the college’s INBRE program and faculty mentored student
research. The INBRE Network Institution Coordinator is charged with managing the
allocation and working with participating faculty to distribute funds to faculty mentors
engaged in research with selected students to purchase supplies, small equipment,
and other research-associated expenses; to support travel; and to pay mentor and student
wages.
Student Support
- UW Summer Internship - The Summer SRP-UW program is also open to Wyoming CC and RAIN students. Selection
is based on academic record, faculty letters of support, and proposal quality. These
students select a mentor from a list of selected UW investigators with a record of
undergraduate mentoring success who have volunteered to host summer students. The
list also provides short descriptions of mentor research projects available to students.
For CC and RAIN participants who earn one of these “in residence” positions, the INBRE
AC will work with the student’s home INBRE program to arrange housing. Recruitment
occurs via posting on the INBRE and RAIN websites and by email notices to UW, CC,
and RAIN students via CC Network Institution Coordinators and INBRE PD/PIs, PCs, and
the SRP Director.
- CC-UW Transition Student Award - To facilitate the transfer of CC students to UW as they pursue further education
and training, the SRP CC–UW Transition Program provides support for selected CC students
to attend UW for their junior and senior years and engage in INBRE- supported research
activities in addition to their degree coursework. During their first semester in
residence, transfer students rotate through a series of INBRE-supported laboratories
to observe and participate in the active research environment. In the second semester,
in conjunction with the INBRE administration, each student selects a laboratory group
to work with for the remainder of their baccalaureate program. The students must maintain
full-time enrollment and at least a B (3.0) grade point average while being supported.
Recipients are selected by INBRE-participating CC faculty, the SRP Director, and the
PD/PI based on academic record, faculty letters of support, and an essay describing
their academic and career goals and commitment to pursuing a career in the biomedical/health
sciences fields.
- Government/Industry Internships - To increase the number and diversity of SRP internships, INBRE is pursuing partnerships
with government labs and industry to offer summer internships in a variety of university,
government, and industry labs across Wyoming. At present, a limited number of summer
positions are available at the Wyoming Public Health Laboratory in Cheyenne, WY.
