Record number attend UW sustainable ranching seminar

A Jan. 10 sustainable ranching meeting drew the largest crowd ever to attend a University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service meeting in Wheatland.

Dallas Mount, CES educator for Platte, Goshen and Laramie counties, said the meeting attracted 280 people.

Mount said his office has had other workshops for livestock producers, but this was the first time nationally known speakers were invited. Mount attributed the increased attendance to the speakers.

Speakers included Colorado cattle rancher Kit Pharo and North Dakota State University Professor Emeritus Harlan Hughes. “Both of these individuals have a good following in the industry,” said Mount.

Pharo, a cattle producer from Cheyenne Wells, Colo., publishes a quarterly newsletter with more than 20,000 subscribers. Mount said Pharo uses unique and innovative ideas to create a more efficient and profitable cow/calf operation.

Hughes continues to write “The Market Advisor” column in Beef magazine, seeking key factors in operating a high-profit beef cow herd.

“I think ranchers know they need to focus their management on profitability, not production,” said Mount. “We really hit a note with the focus on profitability. Our goal was to get producers thinking about new ways of doing things. I hope we raised more questions than we answered, and producers will seek the answers through aggressive management in their own operations.”

Mount said proceeding papers from the seminar are available for $5 each. Interested persons can send a check payable to Platte County Extension to Dallas Mount, Platte County Extension, 57 Antelope Gap Rd., Wheatland, WY 82201-8959
