Welcome to the Animal Science Department!

We are excited about the good things happening in Animal Science! We apply land-grant principles of learning, discovery and engagement for the benefit of students, consumers and clientele associated with animal agriculture. In the past few years, our research productivity and relevance has been ranked 7th and 5th, respectively, in national comparisons of Departments of Animal Science. Our priority areas of research and corresponding expertise of faculty include:

  • Nutrition
  • Reproductive Biology
  • Livestock Production Systems
  • Meat Science and Food Technology

The Department

It is the mission of the Department of Animal Science to facilitate the long-term viability of animal agriculture by conducting focused, comprehensive and integrated research, teaching and extension programs that meet the declared and/or assessed needs of Wyoming citizens.

The Students

Animal Science offers a combined curriculum with Veterinary Science. Therefore, students can major in Animal and Veterinary Science (ANVS) in one of eight options. In addition, we offer an emphasis area in Ag Education, a Plan A (thesis) and Plan B (non-Thesis) Masters, and a  Ph.D. graduate program in our priority areas of research.

Cowboy Youth Classic

2017 Cowboy Youth Classic

The 2017 Cowboy Youth Classic featuring beef, goat, hog and lamb fitting and showing clinics will be held June 16th and 17th at the Albany County Fairgrounds.

Guidelines for Cowboy Youth Classic swine exhibitors:

  • CYC will follow guidelines provided by the Wyoming Livestock Board.
  • All swine exhibitors must provide a signed affidavit to exhibit, as well as an import CVI (Certificate of Veterinary Inspection) for swine born outside of Wyoming. 
  • A Swine Exhibition Affidavit will be required for all swine. Swine Exhibition Affidavit

Health Inspection Papers will be required for all other out-of-state animals.

  • Aug 16  - 4-H Horse Development Committee Meeting, Douglas

2017 Horse Camps with Jenny Ingwerson-Niemann

Congratulations to the 2017 UW Livestock Judging Team!!!

It was a great trip to Texas for the 2017 UW Livestock Judging Team. Not only did they get to enjoy 80 degree weather but more importantly the team finished 4th overall at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.

4th - Overall
3rd - Cattle
5th - Sheep, swine, and reasons
Zane Mackey and Garrett Barton finished 4th and 8th in hogs, respectively.

The team also started the year off with a 10th place finish at the National Western Stock Show.
