Welcome to the Animal Science Department!

We are excited about the good things happening in Animal Science! We apply land-grant principles of learning, discovery and engagement for the benefit of students, consumers and clientele associated with animal agriculture. In the past few years, our research productivity and relevance has been ranked 7th and 5th, respectively, in national comparisons of Departments of Animal Science. Our priority areas of research and corresponding expertise of faculty include:

  • Nutrition
  • Reproductive Biology
  • Livestock Production Systems
  • Meat Science and Food Technology

The Department

It is the mission of the Department of Animal Science to facilitate the long-term viability of animal agriculture by conducting focused, comprehensive and integrated research, teaching and extension programs that meet the declared and/or assessed needs of Wyoming citizens.

The Students

Animal Science offers a combined curriculum with Veterinary Science. Therefore, students can major in Animal and Veterinary Science (ANVS) in one of eight options. In addition, we offer an emphasis area in Ag Education, a Plan A (thesis) and Plan B (non-Thesis) Masters, and a  Ph.D. graduate program in our priority areas of research.

Congratulations to the 2017 UW Livestock Judging Team!!!

It was a great trip to Texas for the 2017 UW Livestock Judging Team. Not only did they get to enjoy 80 degree weather but more importantly the team finished 4th overall at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.

4th - Overall
3rd - Cattle
5th - Sheep, swine, and reasons
Zane Mackey and Garrett Barton finished 4th and 8th in hogs, respectively.

The team also started the year off with a 10th place finish at the National Western Stock Show.

UW Horse Judging Academy

Come join the University of Wyoming Horse Judging Team & WY 4-H at the first annual Wyoming Horse Judging Academy!

When and Where:

  • Saturday April 1, 2017: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
    Classroom Academy day on the UW Campus in the Animal Science Building
  • Sunday April 2, 2017: 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
    Judging live horses, kindly hosted by Spur Ridge Equestrian Center


  • Youth (Up to 18 years of age)
    Early bird $15 each by March 10th
    $20 After March 10th
  • Adults (19 and over)
    Early bird $20 each by March 10th
    $25 after March 10th

We will be hosting a classroom academy day on Saturday, April 1st teaching the basics of horse judging, as well as what the judges are looking for. This will be a fun day of learning, raffle tickets, and door prizes.

On Sunday, April 2nd classroom material will be applied judging live horses at Spur Ridge Arena. This event is perfect to prepare 4-H and FFA youth competing at the WY State FFA Horse Judging Contest the following week! The WY Horse Judging Academy is also open to any adults wishing to learn about horse judging.

Food, fun and prizes will be provided. Detailed schedule to come!

Pig and Lamb Sale

Date: April 15, 2017
Location: Cliff and Martha Hansen Teaching Area

Pigs: Selling approximately 100 pigs. All January and February borm. York/Hamp/Duroc Crosses. Free Pig Donated by The Feed Store.
Lambs: Selling approximately 12 lambs. January born. Suffolk/Hamp Crosses. Sired by Cabaniss Ram.

10:00 am - Viewing starts.
11:30 am - Lunch will be provided.
1:00 pm - Sale starts.

Block and Bridle will be doing a Chili Cook Off for lunch. $25 per entry. The winner will get half of the entry pot. The club will provide condiments and paperware.
