Experience the UW College of Engineering and Physical Sciences Job Shadowing Program with local employers. Gain real-world exposure at local businesses, delve into the science and technology industries, and chart your path in engineering and physical sciences. Meet professionals, witness real-world applications, and set the course for your future career.

In order to take part in this program, please review the projects below and email a resume to the contact listed. Please let that contact know what specific day or morning/afternoon you would like to shadow and what person/profession you would like to shadow. This information should be included in the body of your email.

Key Dates:

  • August 31 to September 25: Applications will be accepted by employers
  • September 25 – 29: Employers will be reaching out to applicants
  • October 1 - November 30: Job shadowing takes place

REIMAN CORP

  • Shadow a Project Manager. Project Managers oversee all aspects of the construction process, including coordination with owners, engineers, and architects. Establishing and maintaining project schedule and buyout and cost tracking. Coordination with superintendent and field staff to ensure assigned projects are completed on time, on budget and with the specified scope. Projects may be in Cheyenne or Laramie.

    • Available dates: October 1st – November 17 (8:00 AM- 5:00 PM) any day (Monday-Friday) Half days only.

  • Shadow a Superintendent. A superintendent is responsible for all field oversight of one or several construction projects, including safety, budget, schedule, and resources. Reiman Corp superintendents self-perform the following items and would require understanding in the following: minor grading, structural concrete, concrete flatwork, structural steel erection, pile driving, etc. 

    • Available dates: October 1st – November 17 (8:00 AM- 5:00 PM) any day (Monday-Friday) Half days only.

STANTEC

  • Shadow a Transportation/Project Manager. Ben Weaver is a UW grad, Transportation/Project Manager with Stantec’s Cheyenne Office. He has worked in the civil engineering and surveying field for 19 years. He is an expert in urban and rural roadway design, transportation engineering, and traffic analysis. While most of his experience lies within transportation, Ben’s experience includes hydrologic assessments, open channel and closed conduit hydraulics, storm drain design, potable water design, sanitary sewer design, lift station design, flood and sprinkler irrigation design, water rights, safety of dams design and permitting, construction administration, public involvement, and cost estimating. The broad base of projects that he has completed allows him to stay diversified and contribute significantly to the services provided to Stantec clients

  • Shadow a Senior Water Resources Engineer. Pamela Massaro is a Principal, Senior Water Resources Engineer in Stantec’s Fort Collins Office. Pamela’s work experience has primarily focused on water resource engineering, project management and construction management. She has experience with storm water and sanitary sewer collection systems, hydrologic, hydraulic and water quality modeling, TMDL evaluations, industrial and construction storm water management, permitting, mining, FEMA flood insurance studies, as well as watershed modeling. Ms. Massaro has worked on impairment studies (bacteria, turbidity, low dissolved oxygen, chloride and nutrient/ eutrophication). She and her team have extensive experience with erosion and sediment control inspections for installation of green stormwater infrastructure BMPs, sanitary sewer, and flood protection projects.

STURDY AI

  • Shadow a CTO and CO-Founder of a Software Startup. Nathaniel Hazelton - CTO and Co-Founder of a software startup, Sturdy, with software a software development office in Laramie.  As CTO he is ultimately responsible for all software and engineering from system and software architecture to data science and machine learning to product management and our product in production. He not only focuses on the high-level, like architecting a new feature for our customers or extending our database architecture.  But he also writes actual code.  Currently he is working to integrate GPT into their product.

TRIHYDRO

  • Shadow a Software Engineer. Heather Aust – As a software engineer at Trihydro, I craft dynamic web applications that merge functionality with elegant design. My expertise in coding, problem-solving, and collaboration allows me to create digital solutions that engage and empower users while driving technological innovation. I use a variety of tools to run and debug code to ensure a quality product.

    • Available dates: October 16, 17, 18 (mornings or afternoons)

  • Shadow a Group Manager for the Energy Services Team. Katie Mitchell – Katie Mitchell, P.G. is a Group Manager for the Energy Services Team. The Energy Services Team provides a diverse range of services, including delineation and remediation, RCRA Permitting, and ESAs. Katie’s current workload generally includes project and group management, procurement of subcontractors, field coordination, agency correspondence, report preparation, and data management.

    • Available dates: November 6 - 10, or November 13 - 17 (morning or afternoon)

  • Shadow a Compliance Officer. Caitlin Fields – Caitlin is responsible for site compliance at a refinery in New Mexico.  This includes agency correspondence, report preparation, and client meetings.  She is a project manager and manages projects that include routine monitoring and reporting, permit support, and one-time events.  Project activities include groundwater monitoring, drilling investigations, permit applications, turnaround oversight, agency document requests, and many more.

    • Available dates: October 18 or 25 and November 1 or 8 (all mornings)

  • Shadow a Member of the Infrastructure and Natural Resources Division. Tyson Dutton – Tyson is part of the Infrastructure and Natural Resources division of Trihydro. His main focus includes the design of transportation and water line projects. Occasionally, he also has project manager duties on a project. Currently, he’s working on two transportation projects, one as a project manager; and he’s involved in two small water line projects, one as an assistant project manager.

    • Available dates: October 3, 5, 11, 13, 16, 19, 24, 26, or 30, and November 3, 7, 10, 15, 16, or 29

  • Shadow a Member of the Abandoned Mine Land Programs. Mattie Rufenacht – Mattie works with Abandoned Mine Land Programs to address the hazards and environmental concerns associated with remaining mine features. Some of the features she helps to address include vertical openings, highwalls, accessible mine workings, stream erosion, and subsidence issues. She assists with eligibility reviews, permitting, specification and plan set development, construction management, reporting, and site monitoring.

    • Available dates: October 2-5, 12, 16 - 20, 23 - 27, and November 6 - 10, 13 - 17

  • Shadow a Member of the Petroleum and Petrochemical Services Business Unit. Jacob Reed – Jacob works for the Petroleum and Petrochemical Services Business Unit at Trihydro assisting clients with environmental remediation projects. His primary clients are oil refineries, and we help them with a verity of environmental services. Some current projects involve groundwater recovery and remediation, impacted waste excavation/disposal, and landfill operations and management.

  • Shadow a Member of the Mining and Mineral Services Team in the Infrastructure and Natural Resources Business Unit. Zach Hutson – Zach Hutson is in the Mining and Mineral Services team in the Infrastructure and Natural Resources business unit.  Mr. Hutson assists clients with environmental permitting and engineering design needs for operating or to be operating mines in Wyoming, Montana, and Nevada.  Mr. Hutson also has experience in construction management and oversight, subsurface investigation, reclamation design, and reclamation permitting.

  • Shadow a CPESC. Michelle Sutherburg - Michelle Sutherburg, CPESC, Trihydro Project Manager managing projects for the Ecological Services Group.  Michelle has been with Trihydro for more than 10 years and as a Project Scientist has had the opportunity to work across multiple business units on a variety of projects from reclaiming abandoned mine lands, enhancing habitats and improving ecosystem functions, stormwater management, to remediating impacted sites.  Current projects include wrapping up a soil reconstruction Pilot Study, verifying remote sensing data, wetland delineations/characterizations, and managing stormwater permits for large scale construction projects.

WYDOT

 

  • Shadow the Design Team Leader of the WYDOT Laramie Design Squad. Alan Moore is the Design Team Leader of the WYDOT Laramie Design Squad and has been in Project Development for twelve years, six of those in the Laramie Design Squad here at the University of Wyoming. WYDOT Project Development is composed of six design squads responsible for developing contract plans for state highway construction projects. The Laramie Design Squad is unique in that it employs UW engineering students who are trained in the fundamental principles of roadway design along with Bentley Microstation and OpenRoads. Students work on actual WYDOT projects and make significant contributions to multi-million dollar roadway projects. The opportunity to shadow any of the other five squad leaders at headquarters in Cheyenne is also an option if students would prefer that.

    • Available dates: any day from October 1 – November 30 except for October 24 – October 27, November 10, and November 23 – 24
