Dr. Brian Kennedy received his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry in 1997 at the University
of Wyoming. After several years of postdoctoral research at the U.S. Army Research
Laboratory, in Maryland, Brian began teaching at the high school level in North Carolina
through Teach for America (1999-2002). For the past ten years, Brian has been the
Director of the Chemical Analysis Research Laboratory at Thomas Jefferson High School
for Science and Technology, VA (TJHSST). As Director, he instructs Chemistry Research
and Mentorship, and Introduction to Organic Chemistry with Instrumental Analysis.
He has also coached teams to state championships in both wrestling and cross-country.
Brian has also been involved in a variety of outreach efforts to promote chemical
education. Over the past few years he has been a contributing member with the American
Chemical Society (ACS) preparing a new document, Guidelines for Instruction of High
School Chemistry. He has also served as a grant reviewer for the National Research
Council, a peer-reviewer for the Journal of Chemical Education, served on a National
Academy of Sciences Chemical Sciences Roundtable, and actively promotes chemical education
through school-related activities. In 2002, during his tenure in North Carolina,
Brian was awarded for his outstanding instruction in science education. In 2007,
the ACS Chemical Society of Washington selected Brian for the Leo Schubert Award for
Instruction of High School Chemistry. Brian recently completed a graduate Education
