Financial Aid

The economics PhD program offers competitive applicants an annual $17,145 assistantship plus full tuition and fees, including the full cost of student health insurance, for up to five years. Particularly strong applicants may receive additional funding, and there may be funding available for travel, conferences and research. The economics MS program often offers funding to particularly strong students.

Additional Information

  • The minimum GPA requirement is 3.0 on a 4-point scale.
  • If accepted into a graduate program, official copies of GRE and TOEFL scores must be provided.
  • A subject GRE test is not required.
  • The GMAT cannot be a substitute for the GRE.
  • Although not required, you are welcome to submit a resume.
  • We often conduct Skype conversations with promising applicants following an initial review of application materials but we do not require interviews.

Statement of Purpose

You will be required to attach a statement of purpose to your application. The statement of purpose (one to three pages) should describe why you are interested in pursuing a graduate degree in Economics; how your professional, academic, and personal experiences led you to pursue this path and how they have prepared you for success in this degree program; what you hope to do following the graduate program; what your research interests are; what/who faculty research is of particular interest to you; and why the University of Wyoming is a good fit for you. You do not need to describe a particular research topic as you would in a research proposal. Feel free to correspond over email with faculty whose work interests you, and then to include their names in your SOP.

MS QuickStart Program

UW undergraduates can complete the MS degree in just one year after completing their BS degree if they apply to the MS QuickStart program in their junior year.

Funding is available for the year of graduate studies.

To be eligible, students must have (and maintain) a cumulative GPA of 3.200 or better as well as an Economics GPA of 3.200 or better. They are also required to take the GRE by the fall of their senior year and score above 300 combined on the verbal and quantitative sections combined.

Admission to the QuickStart program allows students to double-count 6 credits of courses taken as an undergraduate towards both the BS and MS degrees, and reserve an additional 6 credits of courses taken as an undergraduate towards the MS degree alone.

This then leaves only 18 credits to be taken after completion of the BS degree, which is feasible in just one year.

More information about the MS QuickStart program can be found here.
