Marvin Millgate Community Engagement Awards

Outreach and Engagement with the state are core goals of the University of Wyoming and integral to our land-grant mission.  Building a strong culture of engagement and collaboration involving the exchange of knowledge and resources means developing partnerships in a context of reciprocity with the citizens and institutions of Wyoming, the nation and the world.  The Marvin Millgate Community Engagement Awards recognize individuals and groups at the University of Wyoming and in the community who have rendered exceptional engagement and service to Wyoming communities.


Ana Houseal, outreach science educator for the Science and Math Teaching Center (SMTC) at the University of Wyoming, is the recipient of the 2020 Marvin Millgate Engaged Faculty Award for her work with Wyoming school districts. To see the press release click here.

Jane Crayton and Mary Louise Wood have a unique relationship with their collaborative work on programming for Albany County 4-H students. That partnership gives them a share of the University of Wyoming’s Marvin Millgate Engaged Staff Award. To see the press release click here.

Morgan Longstreth, a University of Wyoming Department of Psychology doctoral student from Newark, Ohio, is conducting research that focuses on issues in older adults related to mental health, technology preference and rurality.To see the press release click here.

Healthy Kids Rx, A collaborative health project among a Laramie business Crossfit 7220, Albany County School District 1 and the University of Wyoming’s Division of Kinesiology and Health Promotion is the recipient of the Marvin Millgate Excellence in Community Partnership Award.  To see the press release click here.

Marvin Millgate-Engaged Faculty Award

The Marvin Millgate-Engaged Faculty Award will be presented to one faculty member whose demonstrated scholarship and/or practice of engagement significantly advances knowledge-sharing between academic disciplines and the public. Eligibility: Full-time, tenured/tenure-track faculty member, or academic professional lecturer/research scientist/extension educator (extended term track). 

Award Amount: $1000

Marvin Millgate-Engaged Staff Award

The Marvin Millgate-Engaged Staff Award recognizes one staff member at the university who both supports learning and development through community engagement and builds strong, reciprocal relationships between the campus and the community. Eligibility: Any full time staff member.

Marvin Millgate-Student Engagement Award

The Marvin Millgate-Student Engagement Award recognizes one outstanding university student or recognized student organization that has been engaged in service-learning or other service opportunities that have made a tangible difference in the community. Eligibility: Any full-time student or Recognized Student Organization.

Marvin Millgate-Excellence in Community Partnership Award

This award recognizes community organizations that have rendered exceptional outreach and/or engagement within Wyoming’s communities through partnership with the University of Wyoming. Awards will be presented to community organizations with a distinguished record of engagement. Recipients of these awards have made a significant contribution to their communities and enhanced the institution’s culture of engagement, further establishing and strengthening the University of Wyoming’s commitment to supporting the communities we serve.

2018 Inaugural Marvin Millgate Award Winners

Susan Dewey, associate professor in the School of Culture, Gender and Social Justice, received UW’s inaugural Marvin Millgate Engaged Faculty Award for establishing the Wyoming Pathways from Prison Project which provides high-quality college courses to incarcerated women and men at no cost through UW volunteers. To see the press release click here.

Alec Muthig, a UW information technology trainer, received UW’s inaugural Marvin Millgate Engaged Staff Award for coordinating technology and teaching for the UW Pathways from Prison Project, which provides high-quality college courses to incarcerated women men at no cost through UW volunteers. To see the press release click here.

Dilnoza Khasilova, who is pursuing her Ph.D. in literacy after earning a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from UW’s College of Education, received UW’s inaugural Marvin Millgate Student Engagement Award for founding the World Language and Culture Program which provides free language courses to UW and the Laramie community.To see the press release click here.

The Wyoming Conservation Exchange (WCE), a partnership among UW Extension faculty members and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), Sublette County Conservation District (SCCD), the Wyoming Chapter of the Nature Conservancy and the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, that provides private-market financial incentives to landowners for engaging in environmentally beneficial activities received UW’s inaugural Marvin Millgate Excellence in Community Partnership Award. To see the press release click here.
